Fundamentals of Paediatric ECMO
Start date: Thursday 4th June 8:30 am - Friday 5th June 4:30 pm

During this two-day, scenario-based course our experts in Paediatric ECMO will take delegates through the referral route for paediatric ECMO and explore the ethical and practical aspects involved.
We will explore the history of ECMO and ELSO with an overview of ECMO circuit components and function and then our experts will cover situations commonly encountered in clinical practice. You will hear about:
- Roles and responsibilities of multi-disciplinary ECMO teams
- Indications and contraindications for paediatric ECMO referral
- What happens during ECMO: basic monitoring and support
- Common complications and the impact of ECMO on other organ systems
- Ethical issues around ECMO initiation and continuation
Delivery
We are offering this course in two delivery modes – in person at the Freeman Hospital’s Education Centre where you can meet the team and experience hands on simulation and demos. Or join us online where you will be able to observe all activities, interact during a live Q&A, and participate during theoretical lectures.
Simulation activities
On day one we will run a simulation exercise focusing on the referral of a septic patient not on ECMO. On day two we will explore a VV ECMO case and a VA ECMO case.

This interactive course is aimed at all healthcare professionals involved in paediatrics and neonates and would also be suitable for those working in emergency, urgent and critical care environments. As well as doctors we very much welcome bookings from advanced nurse practitioners and AHPs.
