SUMMARY:Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgical Trainee Casting Course – December 2025
DESCRIPTION:During this two day course delegates will learn the basic casting techniques and skills specifically required for CPD surgical trainees development within the NHS. \nOverview\nThe Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre is a level 1 major trauma centre at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary\, one of twelve major trauma centres in the UK treating both adults and children. \nThis course covers the basic principles of casting techniques and skills specifically required for surgical trainees’ continuing professional development in the NHS. \nIt will explore the appropriate prescriptions relating to injury including the safe application of backslabs as well as full casts with manipulation techniques. \nDelivery of the course comprises a range of presentations and workshop learning led by specialists in their field. The hybrid theoretical and practice approach includes regular Q&A sessions\, assessment and periods of reflection\, all designed to support delegates to understand and consider: \n\nthe professional accountability and legal issues associated with cast application;\nthe theoretical basis to justify the decision making process in the selection of the appropriate casting technique\, focusing on prescription\, materials\, positioning\, and application process;\nthe anatomy of upper and lower limb trauma and orthopaedic injury conservative management;\nthe clinical knowledge and practical skills required to perform safe casting technique practiced in workshop conditions.\n\nLearning outcomes\nBy the end of the course\, the delegate will be able to: \n\nexplain how the knowledge and skills gained will develop their current competence;\napply anatomy and physiology in a trauma and orthopaedic setting implementing the correct immobilisation techniques;\ncreate and evaluate a prescription plan\, demonstrating the appropriate selection and application of materials and casting technique;\ndemonstrate in a workshop setting practical competence in the safe removal of a cast;\ninterpret the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Casting Guidelines specific to prescription and application making sound judgements and applying these to practice.\n\nAudience\nWhilst aimed at Surgical Trainees CT2 and above\, we welcome applications from experienced members of T&O MDTs. \nFees\n£300 \nDates and times\nDay One: Monday 15 December 2025\n9:00am to 5:00pm \nDay Two: Tuesday 16 December 2025\n9:00am to 5:00pm \nVenue\nEldon Court\n2 Percy Street\nNewcastle upon Tyne\nNE1 7YE \nFinancial information\nIf you are employed by Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust\, you can use the coupon code NUTH at the checkout to make a provisional booking and you will need to arrange access to in-house development funding. It requires a theoretical basis to underpin practical application and a course of guided practice. \nThe instructors leading this course will be an orthopaedic surgeon and orthopaedic practitioner specialising in casting techniques and they will be joined by a specialist hand therapist. \nThe course content will cover fractures and soft tissue trauma and explore the appropriate prescription relating to the injury including the safe application of backslabs\, casts and splinting techniques.
