SUMMARY:Paediatric Palliative Care Study Day for Hospice Staff - December 2024
DESCRIPTION:This face to face course led by the regional Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) is designed to support staff working in hospices caring for children across the North East and North Cumbria. \nIntroduction\nPaediatric palliative care is about promoting the best possible quality of life and care for every child and young person with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. \nThis specialist field has seen significant growth as the benefits of high quality palliative input is increasingly recognised such as allowing children\, young people and their families to have access to respite care and advocating their choices in terms of where they want to receive end of life care. \nThe Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) based at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle covers the entire North East and North Cumbria region. They provide expert support\, advice and guidance whilst engaging with those looking after children with life limiting and life threatening conditions. \nAs part of their role the team offer training and educational support to help build knowledge\, skills and confidence. SUMMARY:Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgical Trainee Casting Course - December 2024

SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - December 2024
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging.\nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nThis 3 day course has been validated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) in order to match the recommended hours for Level 2 reporting. \nIf delegates have recently received a certificate for Level 1 then they can attend days 1 and 3 only\, if they wish. These delegates can attend the second day of the CBCT course (2a) as it builds on the first day and more workshop elements are included to maximise CBCT teaching and reporting in the time available.  \nDates:\nDay 1:   Monday 16th December 2024\nDay 2:  Tuesday 17th December 2024\nDay 3:  TBC \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. This CBCT training is additional to that already required as part of the Continuing Education and Training in radiology and radiation protection. \nIn line with this report\, practices owning a CBCT unit or wishing to make referrals for CBCT examinations should ensure their staff are trained in the CBCT Core Curriculum. \nThis unique Specialist Consultant taught course offers a three day interactive educational experience focusing on the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (Level 1) and image reporting (Level 2) of both 2D and 3D imaging\, primarily for smaller volume CBCT. \nCompletion of this course equips the practitioner with the knowledge required to comply with their responsibilities according to IRMER (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations). \nCourse description\nWe offer a number of options ranging from the full\, combined three day course\, to individual sessions. You can book a place on the full three-day course below\, or you can contact our team to explore your options by email nuth.ncsa@nhs.net \nOur combined three-day course builds from the first presentation. Full attendance is required to allow certification. Day 3 provides candidates with the opportunity to gain guided practical experience\, and time to reflect on learning before completing the course. \n\nDays 1 and 2 (16 – 17 December 2024) cover Level 1 and 2A course material (this allows didactic\, group work  and interactive workshop elements throughout).\n\n\nDay 3 (TBC) Level 2B covers essential material after delegates have gained practical experience and had time to reflect on their learning\, before completing the course.\n\nA learner / delegate-centred approach is adopted throughout\, allowing delegates to understand the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (IRMER Referrer role). \nAn holistic approach to Image reporting (IRMER Operator Reporter role) covering 2D and 3D imaging primarily for smaller volume CBCT is offered. \nLearning outcomes\nThe course is delivered in two sessions – initial 2 days followed by a separate final day a few weeks after the first 2 day session to allow reflection and utilisation of new skills. \nAt the end of this course delegates will be able to: \n\nMake safe CBCT referrals with a sound understanding of the Physics / Radiation dosages involved and the patient factors to consider before utilising this 3D imaging modality\nAppreciate when 2D and 3D CBCT imaging are best used and how to access guidelines in this regard\nRecapitulate knowledge of 2D dental imaging and learn the anatomical patterns associated with CBCT 3D presentations to know what ‘normal’ looks like\nAppreciate the Radiation safety (IRMER and IRR legislation) surrounding the use of CBCT\nOperate / ‘Drive‘ CBCT viewing software –  utilise MPR screens to interrogate the full FOV\nSafely analyse and construct a smaller Vol CBCT report using ‘protocols’ (utilising taught higher order thinking tools ) in a systematic fashion and know when to ask for help\nAnalyse examples of concerning dental/maxillofacial disease presentations and know how best to refer on urgent cases. DESCRIPTION:This course is ideal for research nurses\, clinical nurse specialists\, pharmacists\, clinical trials and other staff who already have some knowledge of the different types of breast cancers.\nDelivered over two morning sessions\, Dr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will guide you through many of the most relevant topics relating to modern systemic treatments for breast cancer. \nElaine will firstly explain why cancer arises and look at the different ways that the DNA in our cells gets damaged. SUMMARY:Methods of Wound Debridement - February 2025

DESCRIPTION:This face to face course led by the regional Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) is designed to support staff working in hospices caring for children across the North East and North Cumbria. \nIntroduction\nPaediatric palliative care is about promoting the best possible quality of life and care for every child and young person with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. \nThis specialist field has seen significant growth as the benefits of high quality palliative input is increasingly recognised such as allowing children\, young people and their families to have access to respite care and advocating their choices in terms of where they want to receive end of life care. \nThe Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) based at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle covers the entire North East and North Cumbria region. They provide expert support\, advice and guidance whilst engaging with those looking after children with life limiting and life threatening conditions. \nAs part of their role the team offer training and educational support to help build knowledge\, skills and confidence. SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - April 2025
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging\nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nThis 3 day course run in Newcastle by Dr Neil Health\, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist has been validated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) in order to match the recommended hours for Level 2 reporting. \nIf delegates have recently received a certificate for Level 1 then they can attend days 1 and 3 only\, if they wish. These delegates can attend the second day of the CBCT course (2a) as it builds on the first day and more workshop elements are included to maximise CBCT teaching and reporting in the time available.  \nDates\nDay 1:   Tuesday 15 April 2025\nDay 2:   Wednesday 16 April 2025\nDay 3:   Thursday 5 June 2025 \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. This CBCT training is additional to that already required as part of the Continuing Education and Training in radiology and radiation protection. \nIn line with this report\, practices owning a CBCT unit or wishing to make referrals for CBCT examinations should ensure their staff are trained in the CBCT Core Curriculum. \nThis unique Specialist Consultant taught course offers a three day interactive educational experience focusing on the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (Level 1) and image reporting (Level 2) of both 2D and 3D imaging\, primarily for smaller volume CBCT. \nCompletion of this course equips the practitioner with the knowledge required to comply with their responsibilities according to IRMER (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations). \nCourse description\nWe offer a number of options ranging from the full\, combined three day course\, to individual sessions. Day 3 provides candidates with the opportunity to gain guided practical experience\, and time to reflect on learning before completing the course. \nDays 1 and 2 (15 and 16 April 2025)\nCovers Level 1 and 2A course material (this allows didactic\, group work  and interactive workshop elements throughout). \nDay 3 (5 June 2025)\nLevel 2B covers essential material after delegates have gained practical experience and had time to reflect on their learning\, before completing the course. \nA learner / delegate-centred approach is adopted throughout\, allowing delegates to understand the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (IRMER Referrer role). \nAn holistic approach to Image reporting (IRMER Operator Reporter role) covering 2D and 3D imaging primarily for smaller volume CBCT is offered. \nLearning outcomes\nThe course is delivered in two sessions – initial 2 days followed by a separate final day a few weeks after the first 2 day session to allow reflection and utilisation of new skills. \nAt the end of this course delegates will be able to: \n\nMake safe CBCT referrals with a sound understanding of the Physics / Radiation dosages involved and the patient factors to consider before utilising this 3D imaging modality\nAppreciate when 2D and 3D CBCT imaging are best used and how to access guidelines in this regard\nRecapitulate knowledge of 2D dental imaging and learn the anatomical patterns associated with CBCT 3D presentations to know what ‘normal’ looks like\nAppreciate the Radiation safety (IRMER and IRR legislation) surrounding the use of CBCT\nOperate / ‘Drive‘ CBCT viewing software –  utilise MPR screens to interrogate the full FOV\nSafely analyse and construct a smaller Vol CBCT report using ‘protocols’ (utilising taught higher order thinking tools ) in a systematic fashion and know when to ask for help\nAnalyse examples of concerning dental/maxillofacial disease presentations and know how best to refer on urgent cases. SUMMARY:Methods of Wound Debridement - June 2025
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course held on Tuesday 17th June 2025 and Wednesday 18th June 2025 is led by the Newcastle Hospitals’ Tissue Viability Team who will teach the different methods of wound debridement\, with a special focus on conservative sharp debridement. \nDelegates will also hear from guest speakers from the specialties of Dermatology\, Plastics\, Podiatry as well as a physiology and anatomical expert. \nThe objective is to provide a summary of the professional accountability and legal issues associated with wound debridement alongside the theoretical basis to justify the decision-making process in the selection of the appropriate debriding agents. \nA course pack will be provided on the first day\, which will include the course handbook\, notes from the presentations and other useful information. \nLearning outcomes\nDebridement describes the removal of dead or devitalised tissue\, in particular matter and foreign bodies from a wound bed and is generally accepted as a necessary precursor to the formation of new tissue (EWMA 2013). \nAt the end of this two-day course delegates will be able to: \n\nExplore human anatomy and physiology including in depth revision of the buttock\, sacrum and lower limbs\nIdentify normal and abnormal wound healing including when biopsy may be required\nExamine wound debridement techniques and identify the differences between conservative sharp debridement and surgical debridement\nDemonstrate clinical knowledge and practice skills required to perform safe and effective wound debridement techniques\, using clinical grade pigs’ trotters practiced in laboratory conditions\nUse analytic skills to appraise the available literature related to wound debridement\nOpportunity to develop academic writing at Level 7.\n\nAssessment criteria\n\nFormative assessment – completion of a pre-course work booklet provided 4 weeks before the start of the course to be submitted on the first day of the course\nSummative assessment – a 2000 word advanced level case study of care delivered to a patient with a complex wound to be submitted 12 weeks after the course\nSummative assessment – completion of a clinical competencies workbook to be submitted 24 weeks after the course\, you will be expected to work with your chosen practice assessor for an estimated 10-15 hours of supervised practice to meet the course’s learning outcomes and achieve the practical competencies\n\nCourse lead\nDr Fania Pagnamenta\, Clinical Academic Nurse Consultant has a real passion for tissue viability and wound care management and has years of experience supporting nurse colleagues on the wards to deliver wound care to their patients as well as colleagues’ professional development. \nAcademically\, Dr Pagnamenta works at Northumbria University as a researcher where her main interests focus on leg ulceration\, clinical pathways\, and ways to prevent simple wounds from becoming chronic ulceration. \nAudience and criteria\nApplicants should be Registered nurses with a degree in nursing or related subject who work in a clinical area where complex wound care and wound debridement is regularly undertaken\, and which supports learners. \nThey must also be able to identify a practice assessor in their organisation who is a designated Wound Care Health Professional. \nCourse dates\nThe attendance dates for DESCRIPTION:As the number of paediatric tracheostomies rises\, so does the need for close observation by clinicians who have completed competency skills in tracheostomy management and care.  \n✨ This interactive one day course allows delegates to gain an awareness of the anatomy and physiology of the paediatric airway as well as tracheostomy management\, from insertion to de-cannulation. \n✨ It includes 3 skill station group activities followed by 5 simulation scenarios to enable assessment of knowledge and skills towards being ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. \n✨ When delegates have subsequently completed their Tracheostomy Competencies they will then be deemed ‘Tracheostomy Competent’ and receive a certificate. \nLearning outcomes\n\nSuction\, cleaning and changing of a tracheostomy\nUse of a tracheostomy wedge and suction of patient\nPatient tracheostomy change using Marpac and Velcro ties\nUnplanned tracheostomy change\nEmergency tracheostomy change\n\nWe will also look at how the multi-disciplinary team provide care for patients with tracheostomies. \nPre-course materials\nA pre-course workbook on Paediatric Tracheostomy Management will be sent out to delegates to be completed before commencement of the course as an initial assessment. \nFollowing attendance staff will be considered ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. DESCRIPTION:Fetal\, paediatric and adult congenital cardiology is a rapidly developing field of medicine – with advances in healthcare 98.5% of those born with congenital heart disease can be expected to survive to adulthood.\nCongenital heart disease (CHD) patients often require lifelong care\, and training ensures healthcare professionals can manage their needs effectively throughout different life stages\, from infancy to adulthood. \nEducation tailored specifically to CHD supports professionals to effectively manage\, care for and support patients navigating complex comorbidities thus\, empowering patients to live fulfilling lives. DESCRIPTION:During this one day course delegates will learn the theory and treatment of commonly seen hand injuries as well as basic casting techniques and skills.\nDate and time:  Monday 14th July 2025 9:00am – 4:00pm \nVenue:  Eldon Court Education Centre\, Newcastle City Centre \nFee: £175 \nCourse description\nOrthopaedic casting is a procedural skill. It requires a theoretical basis to underpin practical application and a course of guided practice. \nThe instructors leading this course will be an orthopaedic surgeon and orthopaedic practitioner specialising in casting techniques and they will be joined by a specialist hand therapist. \nThe course content will cover fractures and soft tissue trauma and explore the appropriate prescription relating to the injury including the safe application of backslabs\, casts and splinting techniques. DESCRIPTION:Nurse specialists are true leaders in healthcare providing direct patient care\, leading evidence-based practice\, optimising organisational systems\, and advancing nursing practice and research.\nFollowing the success of last year’s Conference we are back – bigger and better with our follow up conference “Embedding four pillars of practice – Reality or Aspiration?” \nKindly supported by Newcastle Hospitals Charity\, and taking place over the course of two days in September\, this year’s conference will provide a dedicated platform for our NS community to network\, share knowledge and best practice\, learn about advancements in their field\, and enhance their skills – all ultimately improving patient care and outcomes whilst contributing to more efficient delivery of services. \nDay One: Thursday 18th September 2025\nThe conference will be opened by our first key speaker – highly respected nursing professional Professor Alison Leary PhD RN FRCN – Senior Consultant at the World Health Organisation and Professor of Healthcare and Workforce modelling at London South Bank University – talking about the importance of the ‘Visibility of Nurse Specialists’. \nClosing the day we welcome patients from our paediatrics\, teenage and young adults\, and adults services sharing their experiences of receiving care from nurse specialists. \nDay Two: Friday 19th September 2025\nRepresentatives from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) will open the second day presenting advanced roles. \nBreakout sessions\nFollowing the opening speakers on both days there will be a number of concurrently run sessions for you to choose from. \nWe have curated an extensive programme of interactive talks\, presentations and sessions dedicated to enlightenment\, demystification and how to break down barriers in equal measure\, allowing colleagues to share resources\, discuss challenges\, and develop strategies for improving patient outcomes. \nThese sessions have been chosen to cover the four pillars of practice which underpin what makes the Nurse Specialist role so vital: \n\nClinical\nEducation\nLeadership\nResearch\n\n(A full programme will be available soon). \nPoster displays – sharing accomplishments\nWe know Nurse Specialists use their specialised knowledge to assess\, analyse\, and deliver patient care\, leading to better outcomes for patients but their role delivers so much more. SUMMARY:Management and Care of Paediatric Tracheostomies - October 2025
DESCRIPTION:As the number of paediatric tracheostomies rises\, so does the need for close observation by clinicians who have completed competency skills in tracheostomy management and care.  \n✨ This interactive one day course allows delegates to gain an awareness of the anatomy and physiology of the paediatric airway as well as tracheostomy management\, from insertion to de-cannulation. \n✨ It includes 3 skill station group activities followed by 5 simulation scenarios to enable assessment of knowledge and skills towards being ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. \n✨ When delegates have subsequently completed their Tracheostomy Competencies they will then be deemed ‘Tracheostomy Competent’ and receive a certificate. \nLearning outcomes\n\nSuction\, cleaning and changing of a tracheostomy\nUse of a tracheostomy wedge and suction of patient\nPatient tracheostomy change using Marpac and Velcro ties\nUnplanned tracheostomy change\nEmergency tracheostomy change\n\nWe will also look at how the multi-disciplinary team provide care for patients with tracheostomies. \nPre-course materials\nA pre-course workbook on Paediatric Tracheostomy Management will be sent out to delegates to be completed before commencement of the course as an initial assessment. \nFollowing attendance staff will be considered ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. DESCRIPTION:Please note our Leading an Empowered Organisation™ (LEO) programme is a development opportunity for nursing\, midwifery and allied health professional (NMAHP) staff working at Newcastle Hospitals only \n\n\n\n\nAttendance\n\n\n\nPart One\n4 – 6 November 2025\n9:00am – 4:30pm\n\n\nPart Two\n22 January 2026\n9:00am – 4:30pm\n\n\n\nCourse description \nLeading an Empowered Organisation™ (LEO) is a dynamic leadership development programme to help leaders to create environments for high performing individuals and teams and to support professional practice and accountability to become a reality. \nDesigned to ensure ownership at every level of the organisation for decision making\, creating effective team relationships\, managing risk and creative problem solving\, the goal of this programme is to enable our senior nurses\, midwives and allied health professionals (NMAHPs) who manage and lead others to reach their full leadership potential. \nThe programme is made up of two parts: \nPart One \nThe first three days of the LEO programme employs a strong emphasis on supporting leaders to develop an empowering approach when leading and managing teams. \nIt provides a practical approach\, containing values and evidenced skills as a ‘tool box’ that can immediately be applied in practice. \nPart Two \nThe follow up component of the LEO programme is a full day review session\, about two months after the initial three-day session. \nDelegates will deliver a short presentation on an improvement project in their practice area which they will have identified during Part One of the programme\, allowing them to apply their newly acquired LEO principles. \nLearning outcomes \nAt the end of this programme delegates will be able to: \n\nDescribe the conceptual framework for LEO and differentiate centralised and decentralised management approaches understanding when each may be most effective\nDefine the leader’s role in articulating expectations for individual and group performance as well as concepts of responsibility\, authority and accountability\nApply the concepts of Responsibility\, Authority and Accountability to issues from personal experience within the delegate’s current role\nDiscuss the need for leaders to build relationships\, avoid unhealthy behaviours and achieve interdependence\nDescribe the role of the leader in modelling respect and regard for others as a ‘way of being’\nReview styles of communication and identify personal prominent style\nExplore the impact of a leader’s unhealthy behaviours on followers and identify their own unhealthy behaviours\nDiscuss the need for empowered leaders to build capacity\, avoid punitive practices and establish a learning environment\nDiscuss the need for empowered leaders to lead change\, avoid problem processing and gain commitment\nConstruct an action plan for using the knowledge\, skills and tools represented in the empowerment framework to improve leadership effectiveness.\n\nAudience and criteria \nOur LEO programme is for Newcastle Hospitals staff only\, aimed at those working at Band 7\, Ward Manager level\, and Band 6\, Aspiring Ward Manager level\, and for those who manage and/or lead teams or who are leaders in their own right from across the NMAHP workforce. \nBooking \nPlease make sure that your manager has agreed for you to attend and that you have approved funding to study the LEO programme in 2025/26. \nTo book a place on this course go to Tickets at the bottom of the page.  At checkout enter coupon code NUTH – this indicates that you have approved funding to study the LEO programme. \nWhen you book a place you will be asked for the following information.
