SUMMARY:Management and Care of Paediatric Tracheostomies - October 2026
DESCRIPTION:As the number of paediatric tracheostomies rises\, so does the need for close observation by clinicians who have completed competency skills in tracheostomy management and care.  \n✨ This interactive one day course allows delegates to gain an awareness of the anatomy and physiology of the paediatric airway as well as tracheostomy management\, from insertion to de-cannulation. \n✨ It includes 3 skill station group activities followed by 5 simulation scenarios to enable assessment of knowledge and skills towards being ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. \n✨ When delegates have subsequently completed their Tracheostomy Competencies they will then be deemed ‘Tracheostomy Competent’ and receive a certificate. \nLearning outcomes\n\nSuction\, cleaning and changing of a tracheostomy\nUse of a tracheostomy wedge and suction of patient\nPatient tracheostomy change using Marpac and Velcro ties\nUnplanned tracheostomy change\nEmergency tracheostomy change\n\nWe will also look at how the multi-disciplinary team provide care for patients with tracheostomies. \nPre-course materials\nA pre-course workbook on Paediatric Tracheostomy Management will be sent out to delegates to be completed before commencement of the course as an initial assessment. \nFollowing attendance staff will be considered ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. SUMMARY:Constraint Induced Movement Therapy for Preschool Children - November 2026
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course introduces therapists to the One-Handed Therapy Intervention (OTI) Programme – a unique toolkit for families who have a child aged 2-4 years with hemiplegia.  \nConstraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a highly evidence based\, complex intervention to improve hand function of children with hemiplegia. \nThere is no current comprehensive resource to give parents/carers step-by-step instructions on how to use activities to target their child’s goals through CIMT. \nThe OTI toolkit addresses this by providing therapists with: \n\nlibrary of graded\, play-based activity cards\,\nuser manuals\,\ntherapy diary\,\nattractive restraint\,\nmotivational resources\,\nfollow-up bimanual programme\,\ndigital record keeping tool.\n\nThe OTI toolkit ensures that therapists have all the pre-prepared components needed to quickly and easily compile an effective evidence based CIMT programme\, that can then be delivered by families and staff in early years settings. \nThe resources that are given to families are designed to support them to successfully implement the programme. \n\nExcellent. The course fee also includes all the materials in the OTI toolkit (see photo above). \nAt the end of the course\, you will be provided with all the components needed to enable you to deliver the programme with one child in order to complete the post course accreditation process. \nUpon successful completion of this accreditation\, you will be provided with the additional kit components to enable you to deliver the programme to a further four children. \nDelegates who have been accredited may order additional materials as required. \n(Please note that you may incur additional charges if delivery is required outside of the UK). \nThis programme uses a range of carefully selected toys which are loaned to families. DESCRIPTION:This two-day course held on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th November 2026 is led by the Newcastle Hospitals’ Tissue Viability Team who will teach the different methods of wound debridement\, with a special focus on conservative sharp debridement. \nDelegates will also hear from guest speakers from the specialties of Dermatology\, Plastics\, Podiatry as well as a physiology and anatomical expert. \nThe objective is to provide a summary of the professional accountability and legal issues associated with wound debridement alongside the theoretical basis to justify the decision-making process in the selection of the appropriate debriding agents. \nLearning outcomes\nDebridement describes the removal of dead or devitalised tissue\, in particular matter and foreign bodies from a wound bed and is generally accepted as a necessary precursor to the formation of new tissue (EWMA 2013). \nAt the end of this two-day course delegates will be able to: \n\nExplore human anatomy and physiology including in depth revision of the buttock\, sacrum and lower limbs\nIdentify normal and abnormal wound healing including when biopsy may be required\nExamine wound debridement techniques and identify the differences between conservative sharp debridement and surgical debridement\nDemonstrate clinical knowledge and practice skills required to perform safe and effective wound debridement techniques\, using clinical grade pigs’ trotters practiced in laboratory conditions\nUse analytic skills to appraise the available literature related to wound debridement\nOpportunity to develop academic writing at Level 7.\n\nAssessment criteria\n\nFormative assessment – completion of a pre-course work booklet provided 4 weeks before the start of the course to be submitted when you attend the course\nSummative assessment – a 2000 word advanced level case study of care delivered to a patient with a complex wound to be submitted 12 weeks after the course\nSummative assessment – completion of a clinical competencies workbook to be submitted 24 weeks after the course\, you will be expected to work with your chosen practice assessor for an estimated 10-15 hours of supervised practice to meet the course’s learning outcomes and achieve the practical competencies\n\nCourse lead\nDr Fania Pagnamenta\, Clinical Academic Nurse Consultant has a real passion for tissue viability and wound care management and has years of experience supporting nurse colleagues on the wards to deliver wound care to their patients as well as colleagues’ professional development. \nAcademically\, Dr Pagnamenta works at Northumbria University as a researcher where her main interests focus on leg ulceration\, clinical pathways\, and ways to prevent simple wounds from becoming chronic ulceration. \nAudience and criteria\nApplicants should be registered nurses with a degree in nursing or related subject who work in a clinical area where complex wound care and wound debridement is regularly undertaken\, and which supports learners. \nThey must also be able to identify a practice assessor in their organisation who is a designated Wound Care Health Professional. \nCourse dates\n\nWednesday 4 November 2026\nThursday 5 November 2026\n\nPayment\nPayments should where possible be made via the online booking system. \nIf you request an invoice at the point of booking\, invoice payment terms are strictly 30 days from the invoice date or 7 days before Monday 5th October 2026 whichever date is the earliest. \nCancellation and refunds policy\nShould you no longer be able to attend the event on the booked date\, please contact the Academy as we may be able to offer an alternative date subject to an admin charge. \nShould you still wish to cancel your booking\, you or your employer will be charged as per the fees outlined below.  Please contact nuth.newcastlehospitalsskillsacademy@nhs.net to cancel your place. \n\n\n\nTimescale\nFee paying course\n\n\nOver 6 weeks\n£25 admin charge\n\n\n2 to 6 weeks\n50% of course fee\n\n\n0 to 2 weeks\n100% of course fee\n\n\n\nIf you do not attend on the day\, you will be charged the full cost of the event place. \nSee our Terms & Conditions and Cancellations & Refunds pages for more details. \nBooking\nTo book a place on this course go to Tickets at the bottom of the page.  Please note that this course has a pre-course assignment therefore tickets are available up to 4 weeks before the start of the course. \nAt checkout you can make an online card payment or enter a coupon code to make alternative payment arrangements. \nAlternative payment arrangements include: \n\nrequesting an invoice (INVOICE)\,\nThe Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust staff internal funding (NUTH) – you will need to complete a Trust study leave form.\n\nPlease see the Making payments & Coupons sections of the Help and FAQs.

SUMMARY:Paediatric Palliative Care Study Day for Hospice Staff - December 2026
DESCRIPTION:This face to face course led by the regional Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) is designed to support staff working in hospices caring for children across the North East and North Cumbria. \nIntroduction\nPaediatric palliative care is about promoting the best possible quality of life and care for every child and young person with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. \nThis specialist field has seen significant growth as the benefits of high quality palliative input is increasingly recognised such as allowing children\, young people and their families to have access to respite care and advocating their choices in terms of where they want to receive end of life care. \nThe Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) based at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle covers the entire North East and North Cumbria region. They provide expert support\, advice and guidance whilst engaging with those looking after children with life limiting and life threatening conditions. \nAs part of their role the team offer training and educational support to help build knowledge\, skills and confidence.
