SUMMARY:Improving clinical practice in Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) - November 2023 cohort
DESCRIPTION:Fetal\, paediatric and adult congenital cardiology is a rapidly developing field of medicine and as the network’s regional Level 1 Centre our experts are proud to offer a five-day course culminating in the provision of a Certificate of Achievement in Improving Clinical Practice in Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). \nThis 5 day course starting on Wednesday 8th November followed by four further sessions on consecutive Fridays from Friday 17th November until Friday 8th December provides a quality assured qualification and is appropriate for a range of healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with congenital heart disease. \nIt aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the care of a patient with congenital heart disease throughout their lifetime\, allowing healthcare professionals to develop vital skills and knowledge to manage the care of patients with complex anatomy and physiology. \nLearning outcomes\nThe aim of the course is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the care of a patient with congenital heart disease (CHD) across the lifespan. \nAt the end of the course delegates will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the physiology of the normal heart and developing fetus in utero alongside the anatomy and physiology of common basic CHD lesions\nRecognise the complexities and pathway for diagnostic fetal imaging\, interventional cardiology\, the expected outcomes and approach to counselling\nRecognise normal ECG and common arrhythmias in CHD and the range of cardiac imaging approaches in the diagnosis and ongoing management including staged surgical options\nUnderstand the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension with associated CHD\nLearn the principles of ventilating the sick heart and gain knowledge of the process of transportation and the importance of preparation and communication\nUnderstand the common pharmacological strategies and complex nutritional requirements throughout a CHD patient’s life\nGain knowledge and understanding of advance\, complex pathways for transplantation\, extracorporeal life support and fontan surveillance\nNavigate ethical dilemmas and difficult and challenging conversations\, transition into adult services\, the psychological impact on health and wellbeing for the patient and their family and end of life care.\n\nCourse Lead\nKaye Walsh is Lead Nurse for the North East North Cumbria Congenital Heart Disease Network (NENC CHDN) with over 20 years’ experience in the field of paediatric nursing\, specifically in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery having worked in specialist centres in Dublin and Newcastle as well as over 10 years of experience in clinical education. \nKaye is passionate about ensuring colleagues are supported to kept abreast of the very latest clinical practice and guidelines\, and is delighted to bring together an array of clinical experts in this field to share their knowledge with colleagues across our national CHD networks. \nAudience\nThis course is appropriate for range of healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). \nCourse dates\n\n\n\n\nDate\nTopic\n\n\nWednesday 8 November\nIntroduction to CHD\n\n\nFriday 17 November\nThe sick child with CHD\n\n\nFriday 24 November\nDiagnosis and management of CHD\n\n\nFriday 1 December\nThe failing CHD circulation\n\n\nFriday 8 December\nPsychosocial impact of living with CHD; Moving into adulthood\n\n\n\n\n  \nFinancial information\nIf you are employed by Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust\, you can use the coupon code NUTH at the checkout to make a provisional booking and you will need to arrange access to in-house development funding. SUMMARY:Methods of Wound Debridement - October Cohort
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course will teach the different methods of wound debridement\, with a special focus on conservative sharp debridement\, facilitated by the Newcastle Hospitals’ Tissue Viability Team with guest speakers from Dermatology\, Plastics\, Podiatry and from Newcastle University. \nThe objective is to provide a summary of the professional accountability and legal issues associated with wound debridement alongside the theoretical basis to justify the decision-making process in the selection of the appropriate debriding agents. \nA pre-course workbook will be sent 4 weeks prior to the face to face study days via email which will need to be completed and submitted it on Day 1 of the course. \nA course pack will be provided on Day 1\, which will include the course handbook\, the notes from the presentations and other useful information. \nLearning outcomes\nDebridement describes the removal of dead or devitalised tissue\, in particular matter and foreign bodies from a wound bed and is generally accepted as a necessary precursor to the formation of new tissue (EWMA 2013). \nAt the end of this two-day course delegates will be able to: \n\nExplore human anatomy and physiology including in depth revision of the buttock\, sacrum and lower limbs\nIdentify normal and abnormal wound healing including when biopsy may be required\nExamine wound debridement techniques and identify the differences between conservative sharp debridement and surgical debridement\nDemonstrate clinical knowledge and practice skills required to perform safe and effective wound debridement techniques\, practiced in laboratory conditions\nUse analytic skills to appraise the available literature related to wound debridement\nOpportunity to develop academic writing at Level 7.\n\nCourse lead\nDr Fania Pagnamenta\, Clinical Academic Nurse Consultant has a real passion for tissue viability and wound care management and has years of experience supporting nurse colleagues on the wards to deliver wound care to their patients as well as colleagues’ professional development. \nAcademically\, Dr Pagnamenta works at Northumbria University as a researcher where her main interests focus on leg ulceration\, clinical pathways\, and ways to prevent simple wounds from becoming chronic ulceration. \nAudience and criteria\nRegistered nurses with a degree in nursing or related subject\, working in a clinical area where wound care and wound debridement is undertaken on a weekly basis. \nApplicants must identify a practice assessor in their organisation who is a designated Wound Care Health Professional \nApplicants must also be working in a clinical area that currently supports learners\, and where complex wound care is regularly undertaken. \nCourse dates\nThe attendance dates for the October cohort are: \n\nTuesday 10th October 2023\nWednesday 11th October 2023
