SUMMARY:Methods of Wound Debridement - February 2025

SUMMARY:Targeted treatments and immunotherapies for breast cancer - January 2025
DESCRIPTION:This course is ideal for research nurses\, clinical nurse specialists\, pharmacists\, clinical trials and other staff who already have some knowledge of the different types of breast cancers.\nDelivered over two morning sessions\, Dr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will guide you through many of the most relevant topics relating to modern systemic treatments for breast cancer. \nElaine will firstly explain why cancer arises and look at the different ways that the DNA in our cells gets damaged. SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - December 2024
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging.\nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nThis 3 day course has been validated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) in order to match the recommended hours for Level 2 reporting. \nIf delegates have recently received a certificate for Level 1 then they can attend days 1 and 3 only\, if they wish. These delegates can attend the second day of the CBCT course (2a) as it builds on the first day and more workshop elements are included to maximise CBCT teaching and reporting in the time available.  \nDates:\nDay 1:   Monday 16th December 2024\nDay 2:  Tuesday 17th December 2024\nDay 3:  TBC \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. This CBCT training is additional to that already required as part of the Continuing Education and Training in radiology and radiation protection. \nIn line with this report\, practices owning a CBCT unit or wishing to make referrals for CBCT examinations should ensure their staff are trained in the CBCT Core Curriculum. \nThis unique Specialist Consultant taught course offers a three day interactive educational experience focusing on the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (Level 1) and image reporting (Level 2) of both 2D and 3D imaging\, primarily for smaller volume CBCT. \nCompletion of this course equips the practitioner with the knowledge required to comply with their responsibilities according to IRMER (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations). \nCourse description\nWe offer a number of options ranging from the full\, combined three day course\, to individual sessions. You can book a place on the full three-day course below\, or you can contact our team to explore your options by email nuth.ncsa@nhs.net \nOur combined three-day course builds from the first presentation. Full attendance is required to allow certification. Day 3 provides candidates with the opportunity to gain guided practical experience\, and time to reflect on learning before completing the course. \n\nDays 1 and 2 (16 – 17 December 2024) cover Level 1 and 2A course material (this allows didactic\, group work  and interactive workshop elements throughout).\n\n\nDay 3 (TBC) Level 2B covers essential material after delegates have gained practical experience and had time to reflect on their learning\, before completing the course.\n\nA learner / delegate-centred approach is adopted throughout\, allowing delegates to understand the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (IRMER Referrer role). \nAn holistic approach to Image reporting (IRMER Operator Reporter role) covering 2D and 3D imaging primarily for smaller volume CBCT is offered. \nLearning outcomes\nThe course is delivered in two sessions – initial 2 days followed by a separate final day a few weeks after the first 2 day session to allow reflection and utilisation of new skills. \nAt the end of this course delegates will be able to: \n\nMake safe CBCT referrals with a sound understanding of the Physics / Radiation dosages involved and the patient factors to consider before utilising this 3D imaging modality\nAppreciate when 2D and 3D CBCT imaging are best used and how to access guidelines in this regard\nRecapitulate knowledge of 2D dental imaging and learn the anatomical patterns associated with CBCT 3D presentations to know what ‘normal’ looks like\nAppreciate the Radiation safety (IRMER and IRR legislation) surrounding the use of CBCT\nOperate / ‘Drive‘ CBCT viewing software –  utilise MPR screens to interrogate the full FOV\nSafely analyse and construct a smaller Vol CBCT report using ‘protocols’ (utilising taught higher order thinking tools ) in a systematic fashion and know when to ask for help\nAnalyse examples of concerning dental/maxillofacial disease presentations and know how best to refer on urgent cases. SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - November 2024
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging. \nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. This CBCT training is additional to that already required as part of the Continuing Education and Training in radiology and radiation protection. \nIn line with this report\, practices owning a CBCT unit or wishing to make referrals for CBCT examinations should ensure their staff are trained in the CBCT Core Curriculum. \nThis unique Specialist Consultant taught course offers a three day interactive educational experience focusing on the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (Level 1) and image reporting (Level 2) of both 2D and 3D imaging\, primarily for smaller volume CBCT. \nCompletion of this course equips the practitioner with the knowledge required to comply with their responsibilities according to IRMER (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations). \nCourse description\nOur combined three-day course builds from the first presentation. Full attendance is required to allow certification. SUMMARY:Constraint Induced Movement Therapy for Preschool Children - November 2024
DESCRIPTION:This unique course introduces therapists to the One-Handed Therapy Intervention (OTI) Programme\nConstraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a highly evidence based complex intervention to improve hand function of children with hemiplegia. \nThe OTI Programme is a tool kit developed by therapists for therapists to use with families who have a child aged 2 – 4 years with hemiplegia. Currently there is no comprehensive resource that gives parents/carers step-by-step instructions on how to use activities to target their child’s goals. \nThe OTI toolkit addresses this by providing therapists with a library of graded\, play-based activity cards\, user manuals\, therapy diary\, attractive restraint\, motivational resources\, a follow-up bimanual programme and a digital record keeping tool. \n\nThis ensures that therapists have all the components needed to quickly and easily compile an effective evidence based CIMT programme that can then be delivered by families and staff in early years settings. \nThe course provides thorough training and support in how to use the OTI tool kit. \nFollowing the course therapists will be required to complete a certification process using the kit (provided during the course) with one child. \nUpon successful completion of this certification\, you will be provided with additional kit components to enable you to deliver the programme to a further four children. Extra materials can be ordered as required. \nThis programme uses a range of carefully selected toys which are loaned to families. These toys are not provided and therefore you are required to obtain these in order to deliver the programme. \nYou will be supplied with information of what toys are needed and suggestions of where in the UK you may purchase them. Every effort has been made to ensure these costs are reasonable and that the majority of the toys are reusable. \nDelivery\nThe course is provided across two days – followed by a subsequent virtual 1:1 certification session approximately 3 – 4 months afterwards. \nKey outcomes by the end of this course include the ability to: \n\nUnderstand the purpose and utility of all the resources in the tool kit\nIdentify children who may benefit from CIMT following assessment\nCreate a bespoke CIMT programme using the OTI toolkit which delivers the key therapy ingredients\, and similarly create a follow up bimanual programme\nSupport families and staff in early years settings to deliver the programmes\nEvaluate progress and plan next steps.\n\nAudience\nThe course is delivered by Janice Pearse and Vicki Wisher\, Advanced Paediatric Occupational Therapists\, both of whom have extensive experience working with children with hemiplegia. \nThe course is open to qualified paediatric Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists. SUMMARY:Introduction to Precision Cancer Medicine – November 2024
DESCRIPTION:The fundamental idea of precision medicine is to offer each cancer patient a treatment approach that is tailored to the unique biology and genetics of their disease. \nThis two session course provides an understanding of the concepts that underlie precision cancer medicine and both its promise and limitations. \nDr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will explain how far we are able to use precision medicine by exploring the features of cancer we can target now\, and where we might get to in the future\, as well as looking at when precision medicine fails\, and why expectations and realities don’t always align. \nCourse delivery\nThe course comprises two morning sessions delivered online via Microsoft Teams: \nSession One\n\nTuesday 12 November 2024 9:30am – 12:30pm\nAn introduction to the scientific concepts that underpin the concept of precision medicine looking at the features of cancer cells that we can target\, the treatments available\, and the tests and technologies needed to match targets with treatments. Includes the example of non-squamous\, non-small cell lung cancer\, where a precision approach is often already used. \nSession Two \nTuesday 19 November 2024 9:30am – 12:30pm\nThe session focuses on the limitations and current realities of precision medicine. Elaine describes why a precision approach isn’t always possible\, or might not give the best outcome\, for every patient. \nThe session closes by exploring progress made in offering a precision-approach with three of the most common cancers: breast\, bowel\, and prostate\, and considering where we go from here. \nDelegates will be given access to recordings of all sessions for three months after completion of the course. SUMMARY:Methods of Wound Debridement - November 2024

SUMMARY:Beginner's Guide to Cancer Immunotherapy - October 2024
DESCRIPTION:This course will introduce the science behind many forms of immunotherapy\, including immune checkpoint inhibitors\, treatment vaccines\, and CAR T cells. \nOverview\nAn introduction to immunotherapy: what it is\, how it works\, and who it’s given to. \nDuring this half day course Dr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will introduce the science behind modern cancer immunotherapies for solid tumours and haematological cancers. \nThe course begins with an introduction to the relationship between cancer and the immune system. This relationship evolves with time\, and Elaine will describe how cancer cells evade and suppress white blood cells to stay alive. \nShe then explains how immune checkpoint inhibitors such as nivolumab and pembrolizumab hope to boost the cancer-fighting response from the person’s immune system. To do this\, she’ll discuss some of the critical features of T lymphocytes and why they’re the focus of these treatments. \nFinally\, in the third session of the morning\, Elaine will describe many other forms of immunotherapy given to cancer patients. These include treatment vaccines\, oncolytic viruses\, double-ended proteins called T cell engagers\, TIL (tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte) therapy\, and CAR T cells. She’ll explain briefly how they work and why they’re valuable treatments for some patients and not others. \nAudience\nThis content is ideal for research nurses\, clinical nurse specialists\, pharmacists\, and clinical trials coordinators. SUMMARY:Methods of Wound Debridement - April 2024

SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - March 2024
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging. \nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. This CBCT training is additional to that already required as part of the Continuing Education and Training in radiology and radiation protection. \nIn line with this report\, practices owning a CBCT unit or wishing to make referrals for CBCT examinations should ensure their staff are trained in the CBCT Core Curriculum. \nThis unique Specialist Consultant taught course offers a three day interactive educational experience focusing on the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (Level 1) and image reporting (Level 2) of both 2D and 3D imaging\, primarily for smaller volume CBCT. \nCompletion of this course equips the practitioner with the knowledge required to comply with their responsibilities according to IRMER (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations). \nCourse description\nWe offer a number of options ranging from the full\, combined three day course\, to individual sessions. Please read the information below to help you decide\, or contact our team to explore your options by email nuth.ncsa@nhs.net \nOur combined three-day course builds from the first presentation. Full attendance is required to allow certification. Day 3 provides candidates with the opportunity to gain guided practical experience\, and time to reflect on learning before completing the course. \n\nDays 1 and 2 cover Level 1 and 2A course material (this allows didactic\, group work  and interactive workshop elements throughout).\n\n\nDay 3 called Level 2B covers essential material after delegates have gained practical experience and had time to reflect on learning before completing the course. Alternatively\, if you have already been certified as Level 1 and 2 CBCT on other national courses you may wish to book this day to top up your CPD.\n\nA learner / delegate-centred approach is adopted throughout\, allowing delegates to understand the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (IRMER Referrer role). \nAn holistic approach to Image reporting (IRMER Operator Reporter role) covering 2D and 3D imaging primarily for smaller volume CBCT is offered. \nLearning outcomes\nThe course is delivered in two sessions – initial 2 days followed by a separate final day a few weeks after the first 2 day session to allow reflection and utilisation of new skills. \nAt the end of this course delegates will be able to: \n\nMake safe CBCT referrals with a sound understanding of the Physics / Radiation dosages involved and the patient factors to consider before utilising this 3D imaging modality\nAppreciate when 2D and 3D CBCT imaging are best used and how to access guidelines in this regard\nRecapitulate knowledge of 2D dental imaging and learn the anatomical patterns associated with CBCT 3D presentations to know what ‘normal’ looks like\nAppreciate the Radiation safety (IRMER and IRR legislation) surrounding the use of CBCT\nOperate / ‘Drive‘ CBCT viewing software –  utilise MPR screens to interrogate the full FOV\nSafely analyse and construct a smaller Vol CBCT report using ‘protocols’ (utilising taught higher order thinking tools ) in a systematic fashion and know when to ask for help\nAnalyse examples of concerning dental/maxillofacial disease presentations and know how best to refer on urgent cases. DESCRIPTION:The fundamental idea of precision medicine is to offer each cancer patient a treatment approach that is tailored to the unique biology and genetics of their disease. \nThis two session course provides an understanding of the concepts that underlie precision cancer medicine and both its promise and limitations. \nDr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will explain how far we are able to use precision medicine by exploring the features of cancer we can target now\, and where we might get to in the future\, as well as looking at when precision medicine fails\, and why expectations and realities don’t always align. \nCourse delivery\nThe course comprises two morning sessions delivered online via Microsoft Teams: \nSession One\n\nTuesday 27 February 2024 9:30am – 12:30pm\nAn introduction to the scientific concepts that underpin the concept of precision medicine looking at the features of cancer cells that we can target\, the treatments available\, and the tests and technologies needed to match targets with treatments. Includes the example of non-squamous\, non-small cell lung cancer\, where a precision approach is often already used. \nSession Two \nTuesday 5 March 2024 9:30am – 12:30pm\nThe session focuses on the limitations and current realities of precision medicine. SUMMARY:Methods of Wound Debridement - December Cohort
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course held on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th December will teach the different methods of wound debridement\, with a special focus on conservative sharp debridement\, facilitated by the Newcastle Hospitals’ Tissue Viability Team with guest speakers from Dermatology\, Plastics\, Podiatry and from Newcastle University. \nThe objective is to provide a summary of the professional accountability and legal issues associated with wound debridement alongside the theoretical basis to justify the decision-making process in the selection of the appropriate debriding agents. \nA pre-course workbook will be sent 4 weeks prior to the face to face study days via email which will need to be completed and submitted it on Day 1 of the course. \nA course pack will be provided on Day 1\, which will include the course handbook\, the notes from the presentations and other useful information. \nLearning outcomes\nDebridement describes the removal of dead or devitalised tissue\, in particular matter and foreign bodies from a wound bed and is generally accepted as a necessary precursor to the formation of new tissue (EWMA 2013). \nAt the end of this two-day course delegates will be able to: \n\nExplore human anatomy and physiology including in depth revision of the buttock\, sacrum and lower limbs\nIdentify normal and abnormal wound healing including when biopsy may be required\nExamine wound debridement techniques and identify the differences between conservative sharp debridement and surgical debridement\nDemonstrate clinical knowledge and practice skills required to perform safe and effective wound debridement techniques\, practiced in laboratory conditions\nUse analytic skills to appraise the available literature related to wound debridement\nOpportunity to develop academic writing at Level 7.\n\nCourse lead\nDr Fania Pagnamenta\, Clinical Academic Nurse Consultant has a real passion for tissue viability and wound care management and has years of experience supporting nurse colleagues on the wards to deliver wound care to their patients as well as colleagues’ professional development. \nAcademically\, Dr Pagnamenta works at Northumbria University as a researcher where her main interests focus on leg ulceration\, clinical pathways\, and ways to prevent simple wounds from becoming chronic ulceration. \nAudience and criteria\nRegistered nurses with a degree in nursing or related subject\, working in a clinical area where wound care and wound debridement is undertaken on a weekly basis. \nApplicants must identify a practice assessor in their organisation who is a designated Wound Care Health Professional \nApplicants must also be working in a clinical area that currently supports learners\, and where complex wound care is regularly undertaken. \nCourse dates\nThe attendance dates for the December cohort are: \n\nTuesday 12 December 2023\nWednesday 13 December 2023
