DESCRIPTION:Please note our Leading an Empowered Organisation™ (LEO) programme is a development opportunity for nursing\, midwifery and allied health professional (NMAHP) staff working at Newcastle Hospitals only \n\n\n\n\nAttendance\n\n\n\nPart One\n10 – 12 November 2026\n9:00am – 4:30pm\n\n\nPart Two\n21 January 2027\n9:00am – 4:30pm\n\n\n\nCourse description \nLeading an Empowered Organisation™ (LEO) is a dynamic leadership development programme to help leaders to create environments for high performing individuals and teams and to support professional practice and accountability to become a reality. \nDesigned to ensure ownership at every level of the organisation for decision making\, creating effective team relationships\, managing risk and creative problem solving\, the goal of this programme is to enable our senior nurses\, midwives and allied health professionals (NMAHPs) who manage and lead others to reach their full leadership potential. \nThe programme is made up of two parts: \nPart One \nThe first three days of the LEO programme employs a strong emphasis on supporting leaders to develop an empowering approach when leading and managing teams. \nIt provides a practical approach\, containing values and evidenced skills as a ‘tool box’ that can immediately be applied in practice. \nPart Two \nThe follow up component of the LEO programme is a full day review session\, about two months after the initial three-day session. \nDelegates will deliver a short presentation on an improvement project in their practice area which they will have identified during Part One of the programme\, allowing them to apply their newly acquired LEO principles. \nLearning outcomes \nAt the end of this programme delegates will be able to: \n\nDescribe the conceptual framework for LEO and differentiate centralised and decentralised management approaches understanding when each may be most effective\nDefine the leader’s role in articulating expectations for individual and group performance as well as concepts of responsibility\, authority and accountability\nApply the concepts of Responsibility\, Authority and Accountability to issues from personal experience within the delegate’s current role\nDiscuss the need for leaders to build relationships\, avoid unhealthy behaviours and achieve interdependence\nDescribe the role of the leader in modelling respect and regard for others as a ‘way of being’\nReview styles of communication and identify personal prominent style\nExplore the impact of a leader’s unhealthy behaviours on followers and identify their own unhealthy behaviours\nDiscuss the need for empowered leaders to build capacity\, avoid punitive practices and establish a learning environment\nDiscuss the need for empowered leaders to lead change\, avoid problem processing and gain commitment\nConstruct an action plan for using the knowledge\, skills and tools represented in the empowerment framework to improve leadership effectiveness.\n\nAudience and criteria \nOur LEO programme is for Newcastle Hospitals staff only\, aimed at those working at Band 7\, Ward Manager level\, and Band 6\, Aspiring Ward Manager level\, and for those who manage and/or lead teams or who are leaders in their own right from across the NMAHP workforce. \nBooking \nPlease make sure that your manager has agreed for you to attend and that you have approved funding to study the LEO programme in 2026/27. \nTo book a place on this course go to Tickets at the bottom of the page.  At checkout enter coupon code NUTH – this indicates that you have approved funding to study the LEO programme. \nWhen you book a place you will be asked for the following information. SUMMARY:Paediatric Palliative Care Study Day for Hospice Staff - December 2026
DESCRIPTION:This face to face course led by the regional Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) is designed to support staff working in hospices caring for children across the North East and North Cumbria. \nIntroduction\nPaediatric palliative care is about promoting the best possible quality of life and care for every child and young person with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. \nThis specialist field has seen significant growth as the benefits of high quality palliative input is increasingly recognised such as allowing children\, young people and their families to have access to respite care and advocating their choices in terms of where they want to receive end of life care. \nThe Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) based at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle covers the entire North East and North Cumbria region. They provide expert support\, advice and guidance whilst engaging with those looking after children with life limiting and life threatening conditions. \nAs part of their role the team offer training and educational support to help build knowledge\, skills and confidence. SUMMARY:Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgical Trainee Casting Course – December 2026
DESCRIPTION:During this two day course delegates will learn the basic casting techniques and skills specifically required for CPD surgical trainees development within the NHS. \nOverview\nThis course covers the basic principles of casting techniques and skills specifically required for surgical trainees’ continuing professional development in the NHS. \nIt will explore the appropriate prescriptions relating to injury including the safe application of backslabs as well as full casts with manipulation techniques. \nDelivery of the course comprises a range of presentations and workshop learning led by specialists in their field. The hybrid theoretical and practice approach includes regular Q&A sessions\, assessment and periods of reflection\, all designed to support delegates to understand and consider: \n\nthe professional accountability and legal issues associated with cast application;\nthe theoretical basis to justify the decision making process in the selection of the appropriate casting technique\, focusing on prescription\, materials\, positioning\, and application process;\nthe anatomy of upper and lower limb trauma and orthopaedic injury conservative management;\nthe clinical knowledge and practical skills required to perform safe casting technique practiced in workshop conditions.\n\nLearning outcomes\nBy the end of the course\, the delegate will be able to: \n\nexplain how the knowledge and skills gained will develop their current competence;\napply anatomy and physiology in a trauma and orthopaedic setting implementing the correct immobilisation techniques;\ncreate and evaluate a prescription plan\, demonstrating the appropriate selection and application of materials and casting technique;\ndemonstrate in a workshop setting practical competence in the safe removal of a cast;\ninterpret the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Casting Guidelines specific to prescription and application making sound judgements and applying these to practice.\n\nAudience\nWhilst aimed at Surgical Trainees CT2 and above\, we welcome applications from experienced members of T&O MDTs. \nFees\n£300 \nDates and times\nDay One: Monday 14 December 2026\n8:30am to 5:00pm \nDay Two: Tuesday 15 December 2026\n8:30am to 5:00pm \nVenue\nEldon Court\n2 Percy Street\nNewcastle upon Tyne\nNE1 7YE \nFinancial information\nIf you are employed by Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust\, you can use the coupon code NUTH at the checkout to make a provisional booking and you will need to arrange access to in-house development funding.
