SUMMARY:Complex Rehabilitation within Major Trauma - February 2024
DESCRIPTION:Following a major traumatic injury patients need specialist rehabilitation input involving a number of specialists from a range of clinical backgrounds. \nBy dissecting the case study of a patient who has encountered complex polytrauma injuries requiring complex rehabilitation overseen by a multi disciplinary team (MDT)\, we will explore the entire journey from the point of admission via surgical intervention\, critical care and rehabilitation support\, right through to discharge home including an overview of MDT outpatient follow-up. \nCourse description\nWe will explore complex decisions encountered such as: \n\ntreatment options and impact on rehab\nweightbearing status and rehabilitation\ndischarge planning\nbalancing mood and motivation\nachieving patient led goals.\n\nDelegates will hear talks from consultants specialising in rehabilitation\, orthopaedics and plastics; a physiotherapist\, occupational therapist\, speech and language therapist\, dietitian\, psychologist and acute pain specialists covering the following content: \n\nPresentation of a complex polytrauma patient’s journey from admission\, to surgeries required and considerations of treatment options\nDemonstration of the acute pain team’s role advising throughout the patient’s journey and how this changes and impacts on rehabilitation\nExploration of physiotherapy’s role on the rehab unit and decisions made regarding weightbearing status\, rehabilitation and discharge planning\nPresentation from occupational therapy outlining their role in planning for discharge and consideration re: vocational rehab post discharge\nPresentation from speech and language therapy and dietetics on the importance of nutrition to aid with recovery\, and dysphagia in a major trauma caseload including the use of instrumental assessment of swallowing and swallow rehabilitation\nDiscussion from keyworkers around their role on the major trauma rehabilitation unit and the follow-up and support given at the Major Trauma Outpatient Clinic\nJoint presentation from orthopaedic consultant and physiotherapist on treatment plans\, subsequent impact on weightbearing status and subsequent rehabilitation\nJoint discussion by plastics and physiotherapy on management of skin grafts and impact on rehabilitation\nA view from psychology on the importance of assessing and managing mood and the support available for engagement within rehabilitation.\n\nLearning outcomes\nBy the end of this one day course you should be able to understand and consider: \n\nthe patient’s injury set and how this classes as a major trauma\nthe importance of pain management with recovery and rehabilitation\nthe impact of weightbearing status and discharge planning\nthe role of an occupational therapist and how this can evolve following discharge\nmood and how to support and motivate a patient\ndysphagia in this patient group and swallow rehabilitation\nnutrition in relation to recovery\, in particular\, when linked with plastics involvement\nthe importance of the keyworker role and the MTROC clinic\nthe importance of MDT working.\n\nCourse leads\nNewcastle Hospitals is home to the Great North Emergency and Trauma Centre – one of only 12 in the UK – and this day-long course comprises a range of talks and presentations led by specialists in their field: \n\nDebbie Hodgson\, Major Trauma Rehabilitation Lead\nLynne Wilkinson\, Major Trauma Rehabilitation Lead\nSinead Savory\, Major Trauma Rehabilitation Lead\nDr Laura Graham\, Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine and Trauma Lead for the Northern Trauma Network\nDr Megan Finegan\, Clinical Psychologist\nAngela Sollars\, Advanced Physiotherapist\nNick Walker\, Advanced Physiotherapist\nLaura Healy\, Advanced Occupational Therapist\nLaura Featherstone\, Advanced Physiotherapist\nEmma Flynn\, Nurse Specialist – Acute Pain\nNicola Stephens\, Nurse Specialist – Acute Pain\nNiki Hartley\, Specialist Physiotherapist\nJenny Slater\, Advanced Physiotherapist\nMr Sultan Qasim\, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon\nMr John Henton\, Consultant Plastic Surgeon\n\nAudience\nThis course is aimed at professionals working with patients who have experienced major trauma injuries requiring complex rehabilitation – whether that be within a Major Trauma Centre\, Trauma Unit\, in the community or as an outpatient.

SUMMARY:Introduction to precision cancer medicine - February 2024
DESCRIPTION:The fundamental idea of precision medicine is to offer each cancer patient a treatment approach that is tailored to the unique biology and genetics of their disease. \nThis two session course provides an understanding of the concepts that underlie precision cancer medicine and both its promise and limitations. \nDr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will explain how far we are able to use precision medicine by exploring the features of cancer we can target now\, and where we might get to in the future\, as well as looking at when precision medicine fails\, and why expectations and realities don’t always align. \nCourse delivery\nThe course comprises two morning sessions delivered online via Microsoft Teams: \nSession One\n\nTuesday 27 February 2024 9:30am – 12:30pm\nAn introduction to the scientific concepts that underpin the concept of precision medicine looking at the features of cancer cells that we can target\, the treatments available\, and the tests and technologies needed to match targets with treatments. Includes the example of non-squamous\, non-small cell lung cancer\, where a precision approach is often already used. \nSession Two \nTuesday 5 March 2024 9:30am – 12:30pm\nThe session focuses on the limitations and current realities of precision medicine. Elaine describes why a precision approach isn’t always possible\, or might not give the best outcome\, for every patient. The session closes by exploring progress made in offering a precision-approach with three of the most common cancers: breast\, bowel\, and prostate\, and considering where we go from here. \nDelegates will be given access to recordings of all sessions for six months after completion of the course. If you are unable to attend a session the recording will ensure you can review any content you have missed. \nLearning outcomes\nBy the end of this introduction to precision cancer medicine delegates will: \n\nUnderstand what precision medicine means – the treatments we are currently working with\, what we can and can’t target and how immunotherapy fits in\nExplore the treatments we use in precision medicine – antibody-based treatments; small molecule kinase inhibitors; and immunotherapies\nRecognise testing methods and potential treatment targets – what we can test for and where to look\, testing for mutations and presence of proteins\, identifying patterns of mutations and what commercial testing platforms can tell us\nAppreciate whether or not we understand how to make a good match and why not everyone benefits from a precision-based approach\nGrasp some of the unsolved questions and limitations in precision medicine\nBe able to reflect on where we have got to\, and where we are heading\, with precision cancer medicine for lung\, breast\, bowel and prostate cancer.\n\nCourse lead\nDr Elaine Vickers PhD of Science Communicated Ltd\nDr Elaine Vickers\, PhD of Science Communicated Ltd has worked as a cancer educator for over twenty years and has previously acted as science communicator for three of the UK’s leading medical research charities\, including four years in the Science Information team at Cancer Research UK. \nElaine is passionate about demystifying the science behind cancer biology and the latest cancer treatments such as kinase inhibitors\, monoclonal antibodies and immunotherapies. \nShe is experienced in teaching people with any level of scientific or medical knowledge from cancer patients through to medical oncologists translating complex and often overwhelming topics into easily digestible and understandable knowledge\, using colourful illustrations to explain scientific concepts. \nHer book\, A Beginner’s Guide to Targeted Cancer Treatments\, was commended by the British Medical Association book awards.
