SUMMARY:Advanced Eye Emergencies Study Day for Nurses - October 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic\, hands-on study day designed to strengthen confidence and skills for nursing practitioners when dealing with ophthalmic emergencies. \nThis interactive day combines theoretical learning working through clinical scenarios\, ensuring delegates leave equipped to oversee the initial management of urgent eye injuries and conditions effectively. \nLearning Outcomes\nBy the end of the day\, you will be able to: \n\nDemonstrate a good understanding of ocular anatomy and thorough history taking\nImpart basic information when referring to Ophthalmology\nFeel confident to provide initial management for chemical injuries\nDiagnose and manage the acute red eye caused by infections\, corneal ulcers\, abrasions\, inflammation/uveitis etc\nUnderstand causes of sudden vision loss such as amaurosis fugax\, vitreous haemorrhage\, GCA with visual symptoms\, optic neuritis etc\nRecognise and address eyelid swelling\nDevelop practical skills for corneal foreign body removal\n\nPractical training sessions held at the RVI’s Emergency Eye Department: \n\nVision + colour vision\nAnisocoria / pupil assessment\nExtraocular movement (EOM) testing and cranial nerve examination\nConfrontational visual fields\nEye irrigation\nSlit lamp examination including corneal foreign body removal and everting eyelids\nDirect ophthalmoscopy vs fundus\n\nAll participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion. \nAudience\nThis study day is ideal for: \n\nOphthalmic nurse specialists and practitioners\nAdvanced clinical practitioners from both primary and secondary care who may be involved in making decisions to send a patient to an Eye Emergency Department\nAny other healthcare professionals with an interest in ophthalmology\n\nFees\n£220 \nDates and times\nSunday 4 October 2026\n8:30am to 4:30pm \nVenue\nEye Emergency Department\nClaremont Wing\nRoyal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)\nQueen Victoria Road\nNewcastle upon Tyne\nNE1 4LP \nFinancial information\nIf you are employed by Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust\, you can use the coupon code NUTH at the checkout to make a provisional booking and you will need to arrange access to in-house development funding. SUMMARY:Management and Care of Paediatric Tracheostomies - October 2026
DESCRIPTION:As the number of paediatric tracheostomies rises\, so does the need for close observation by clinicians who have completed competency skills in tracheostomy management and care.  \n✨ This interactive one day course allows delegates to gain an awareness of the anatomy and physiology of the paediatric airway as well as tracheostomy management\, from insertion to de-cannulation. \n✨ It includes 3 skill station group activities followed by 5 simulation scenarios to enable assessment of knowledge and skills towards being ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. \n✨ When delegates have subsequently completed their Tracheostomy Competencies they will then be deemed ‘Tracheostomy Competent’ and receive a certificate. \nLearning outcomes\n\nSuction\, cleaning and changing of a tracheostomy\nUse of a tracheostomy wedge and suction of patient\nPatient tracheostomy change using Marpac and Velcro ties\nUnplanned tracheostomy change\nEmergency tracheostomy change\n\nWe will also look at how the multi-disciplinary team provide care for patients with tracheostomies. \nPre-course materials\nA pre-course workbook on Paediatric Tracheostomy Management will be sent out to delegates to be completed before commencement of the course as an initial assessment. \nFollowing attendance staff will be considered ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. He is Consultant Editor for the International Journal for Advancing Practice\, Clinical Editor for the British Journal of Nursing\, and a member of the Council of Deans of Health and will share his experience in these roles around the importance of sharing practice and writing for publications. \nRepresentatives from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) will provide an update on the NMC’s Principles for Advanced Practice Framework which was published last year.
