SUMMARY:Principles of Hand Trauma Casting and Splinting - July 2025
DESCRIPTION:During this one day course delegates will learn the theory and treatment of commonly seen hand injuries as well as basic casting techniques and skills.\nDate and time:  Monday 14th July 2025 9:00am – 4:00pm \nVenue:  Eldon Court Education Centre\, Newcastle City Centre \nFee: £175 \nCourse description\nOrthopaedic casting is a procedural skill. It requires a theoretical basis to underpin practical application and a course of guided practice. \nThe instructors leading this course will be an orthopaedic surgeon and orthopaedic practitioner specialising in casting techniques and they will be joined by a specialist hand therapist. \nThe course content will cover fractures and soft tissue trauma and explore the appropriate prescription relating to the injury including the safe application of backslabs\, casts and splinting techniques. (Please note this course does not include thermos plastic splinting.) \nThe hybrid theoretical and practical approach includes presentations\, regular Q&A sessions and assessment\, periods of reflection as well as the opportunity to practice casting\, all designed to support delegates to: \n\nreview the anatomy and physiology of common hand injuries;\nlearn from experts about the optimal management of common hand injuries;\nunderstand the principles of hand rehabilitation and splint management of common conditions;\nconsider professional accountability and legal issues associated with cast application;\nunderstand the theoretical basis to justify the decision making process in the selection of the appropriate casting technique\, focusing on prescription\, materials\, positioning\, and application process;\ndemonstrate\, in workshop conditions\, the ability to implement and evaluate a prescription plan\, including the appropriate selection and application of materials and casting techniques;\ndemonstrate\, in workshop conditions\, the clinical and practical skills required to perform safe casting techniques;\ndemonstrate an understanding and awareness of the requirements for safe removal of a cast;\nclearly articulate how the knowledge and skills gained will help develop their current competence.\n\nAudience\nThis course is aimed at: \n\ndoctors in training\,\nphysiotherapists and occupational therapists with a special interest in the treatment and rehabilitation of hand injuries and conditions\,\nnursing staff with an interest in hand injuries and conditions\,\northopaedic practitioners and plaster technicians.\n\nDelivery of the course presentations and workshop learning will be led by: \n\nMr Pat Crowley\, Consultant Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in hand and sarcoma surgery\nPaul Maher\, Senior Orthopaedic Practitioner\n\nThe delivery team will be accompanied by one of our clinical physiotherapists specialising in plastic hand surgery. \nFees \nThe practical nature of this full day course means that places are limited with a slightly high fee than a mainly theoretical course.  For further information on making payments please see our FAQ – Making Payments \nCancellation and refunds policy\nShould you no longer be able to attend the event on the booked date\, please contact the Academy as we may be able to offer an alternative date subject to an admin charge.  To cancel your place you must email nuth.newcastlehospitalsskillsacademy@nhs.net \nShould you still wish to cancel your booking\, you or your employer will be charged as per the fees outlined below. \n\n\n\nTimescale\nFee paying course\n\n\nOver 6 weeks\n£25 admin charge\n\n\n2 to 6 weeks\n50% of course fee\n\n\n0 to 2 weeks\n100% of course fee\n\n\n\nIf you do not attend on the day\, you will be charged the full cost of the event place. \nSee our Terms & Conditions and Cancellations & Refunds pages for more details.
