As the number of paediatric tracheostomies being performed rises, the need for staff caring for these children also increases.
Babies, infants and children with tracheostomies are reliant on them for breathing and need close observation by clinicians who have completed competency skills in tracheostomy care.
This interactive one day course allows paediatric staff to gain an awareness of the anatomy and physiology of the paediatric airway, general care and management of patients who require a tracheostomy, from the insertion of a tracheostomy to discharge home and de-cannulation.
Delegates will benefit from three skill station group activities at alternate times, followed by carrying out 5 simulation scenarios led by our experienced paediatric clinical educators to assess knowledge and skills learnt throughout the day.
Learning outcomes
- Suction, cleaning and changing of a tracheostomy
- Use of a tracheostomy wedge and suction of patient
- Patient tracheostomy change using Marpac and Velcro ties
- Unplanned tracheostomy change
- Emergency tracheostomy change
We will also look at how the multi-disciplinary team provide care for patients with tracheostomies.
Pre-course materials
A pre-course workbook on Paediatric Tracheostomy Management will be sent out to delegates to be completed before commencement of the course as an initial assessment.
