Our Radiation Protection Supervisors Training encompasses the fundamental principles of radiation safety combined with practical scenario based teaching with the aim to provide you with the appropriate knowledge and confidence to fulfil your duties as an RPS in your workplace.
Under the Ionising Radiations Regulations employers have a duty to provide appropriate training for all employees working with ionising radiation.
These regulations also require radiation employers to appoint one or more suitable Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPS) to ensure compliance with radiation safety measures in accordance the employers Local Rules.
The course is primarily focus to the RPS role in healthcare but is also beneficial for those working in the veterinary and university sectors.
The course is suitable for both new and existing RPSs who require refresher training.
Learning outcomes
The purpose of our training course is to ensure that you as an RPS have a sound understanding of:
- the nature of radiation and its effects on the human body
- the legalisation surrounding its use
- the basic principles of radiation protection in the workplace.
Attendees will benefit from discussions and tools that will enable them to evaluate radiation risks and the effectiveness of the existing controls in relation to their work.
Attendees will also be updated with practical solutions regarding radiation dose monitoring of staff and conducting investigations when investigations levels are exceeded.
The course also covers the expectations of inspectors in relation to radiation safety and compliance with the associated regulations.
Course lead
Ian Birch, Head of Radiation Safety at the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department supported by an experienced team of radiation safety professionals.
Course delivery
The course has been designed to reflect the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and the associated ‘Approved Code of Practice and guidance, having been developed to meet the required Core of Competence as defined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
To optimising learning, training is delivered in hybrid format over two sessions:
Session 1
The attendee has access to pre-recorded material concerning the theory and underpinning knowledge to support the Radiation Protection Supervisor role.
Learners can view the learning material at their own pace; around their own schedule.
Following the successful completion of an online assessment, the delegate is invited to the meeting for Part 2.
Session 2
Virtual teaching in a small group (of typically 6-8 participants), delivered in a half-day session.
The aim of his session is the build on the knowledge gained within Part 1 with a focus on application of typical RPS duties in the workplace.
The total study time for this course is approximately 8 hours.
Once you have a confirmed booking you will receive notification of your user account to gain access to our virtual learning environment, known as the Learning Lab. This account will allow you access to the pre-recorded material and online quiz for Session 1. Once you have successfully completed Session 1 you will then be able to book yourself onto your preferred meeting for Session 2 via the Learning Lab.
