Our Radiation Protection Supervisor Training encompasses the fundamental principles of radiation safety combined with practical scenario based teaching with the aim to provide you with the appropriate knowledge and confidence to fulfil your duties as an RPS in your workplace.
Under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), employers have a duty to provide appropriate training for all employees working with ionising radiation.
These regulations also require radiation employers to appoint one or more suitable Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPS) to ensure compliance with radiation safety measures in accordance with the employer’s Local Rules.
This course is suitable for those new to the RPS role and for existing RPS who require refresher training.
If your employer is not a client of the Northern Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering department, you should contact us before booking a place to ensure that the content is relevant to your work area.
Learning outcomes
The purpose of our training course is to ensure that delegates have a sound understanding of:
- the nature of radiation and its effects on the human body.
- the legalisation surrounding its use.
- the basic principles of radiation protection in the workplace.
Delegates will benefit from discussions that will enable them to:
- evaluate radiation risks and the effectiveness of the existing controls in relation to their workplace.
- understand the practicalities of monitoring of staff, including performing investigations.
The course also covers the expectations of inspectors in relation to radiation safety and compliance with the associated regulations.
Course lead
Ian Birch, Head of Radiation Safety at the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department supported by an experienced team of radiation safety professionals.
Course delivery
The course has been designed to reflect the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and the associated Approved Code of Practice and guidance (L121) and has been developed around the Core of Competence for RPS as defined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in their IRP6 Information Sheet. To optimise learning, training is delivered in hybrid format:
Part 1
The delegate has access to pre-recorded material concerning the theory and underpinning knowledge required by the RPS.
Delegates can view the learning material at their own pace; around their own schedule.
Following the successful completion of the online assessment, the delegate is able to select from the available dates and book a place on Part 2.
Part 2
Live, online teaching in a small group (typically 6-8 participants), delivered in a half-day session.
We aim to provide 10 of these sessions across the year, normally on Tuesdays from 9am – 1pm.
This session will build on the knowledge gained in Part 1 with a focus on the practical aspects of an RPS’s duties in the workplace.
