SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging\nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nThis 3 day course run in Newcastle by Dr Neil Health\, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist has been validated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) in order to match the recommended hours for Level 2 reporting. \nIf delegates have recently received a certificate for Level 1 then they can attend days 1 and 3 only\, if they wish. These delegates can attend the second day of the CBCT course (2a) as it builds on the first day and more workshop elements are included to maximise CBCT teaching and reporting in the time available.  \nDates\nDay 1:   Tuesday 24 March 2026\nDay 2:   Wednesday 25 March 2026\nDay 3:  Thursday 4 June 2026 \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. This CBCT training is additional to that already required as part of the Continuing Education and Training in radiology and radiation protection. \nIn line with this report\, practices owning a CBCT unit or wishing to make referrals for CBCT examinations should ensure their staff are trained in the CBCT Core Curriculum. \nThis unique Specialist Consultant taught course offers a three day interactive educational experience focusing on the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (Level 1) and image reporting (Level 2) of both 2D and 3D imaging\, primarily for smaller volume CBCT. \nCompletion of this course equips the practitioner with the knowledge required to comply with their responsibilities according to IRMER (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations). \nCourse description\nWe offer a number of options ranging from the full\, combined three day course\, to individual sessions. You can book a place on the full three-day course below\, or you can contact our team to explore your options by email nuth.newcastlehospitalsskillsacademy@nhs.net \nOur combined three-day course builds from the first presentation. Full attendance is required to allow certification. Day 3 provides candidates with the opportunity to gain guided practical experience\, and time to reflect on learning before completing the course. \nDays 1 and 2 (24 and 25 March 2026)\nCovers Level 1 and 2A course material (this allows didactic\, group work  and interactive workshop elements throughout). \nDay 3 (4 June 2026)\nLevel 2B covers essential material after delegates have gained practical experience and had time to reflect on their learning\, before completing the course. \nA learner / delegate-centred approach is adopted throughout\, allowing delegates to understand the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (IRMER Referrer role). \nAn holistic approach to Image reporting (IRMER Operator Reporter role) covering 2D and 3D imaging primarily for smaller volume CBCT is offered. \nLearning outcomes\nThe course is delivered in two sessions – initial 2 days followed by a separate final day a few weeks after the first 2 day session to allow reflection and utilisation of new skills. \nAt the end of this course delegates will be able to: \n\nMake safe CBCT referrals with a sound understanding of the Physics / Radiation dosages involved and the patient factors to consider before utilising this 3D imaging modality\nAppreciate when 2D and 3D CBCT imaging are best used and how to access guidelines in this regard\nRecapitulate knowledge of 2D dental imaging and learn the anatomical patterns associated with CBCT 3D presentations to know what ‘normal’ looks like\nAppreciate the Radiation safety (IRMER and IRR legislation) surrounding the use of CBCT\nOperate / ‘Drive‘ CBCT viewing software –  utilise MPR screens to interrogate the full FOV\nSafely analyse and construct a smaller Vol CBCT report using ‘protocols’ (utilising taught higher order thinking tools ) in a systematic fashion and know when to ask for help\nAnalyse examples of concerning dental/maxillofacial disease presentations and know how best to refer on urgent cases. Recognise bone diseases and especially cancers on imaging\nAnalyse relevant 2D and 3D image data and construct a recordable imaging report/assessment\nBegin to understand how image reporting errors / imaging pathway adverse events can occur and appreciate how SOPs\, Bias and Human factors can influence this process.\n\nCourse lead\n\nThe course is run by Dr Neil Heath\, a Consultant Dental and Maxillofacial Radiologist at Newcastle Dental Hospital. \nAn experienced educator in CBCT working in NHS\, academic and industry sectors\, Dr Heath is passionate about delivering relevant enjoyable courses\, to like-minded colleagues. \nAudience\n\nDentists (hospital and high street – primary care and specialist)\nMedically qualified specialists involved in imaging the maxillofacial regions.\n\nCriteria\nIn order to book on this course you will need: \n\nGDC / GMC registration (HCPC registration if a Radiographer)\n\nFinancial information\nIf you are employed by Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust\, you can use the coupon code NUTH at the checkout to make a provisional booking and you will need to arrange access to in-house development funding. SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - December 2025
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging\nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nThis 3 day course run in Newcastle by Dr Neil Health\, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist has been validated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) in order to match the recommended hours for Level 2 reporting. \nIf delegates have recently received a certificate for Level 1 then they can attend days 1 and 3 only\, if they wish. These delegates can attend the second day of the CBCT course (2a) as it builds on the first day and more workshop elements are included to maximise CBCT teaching and reporting in the time available.  \nDates\nDay 1:   Wednesday 17 December 2025\nDay 2:   Thursday 18 December 2025\nDay 3:  Wednesday 4 February 2026 \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. This CBCT training is additional to that already required as part of the Continuing Education and Training in radiology and radiation protection. \nIn line with this report\, practices owning a CBCT unit or wishing to make referrals for CBCT examinations should ensure their staff are trained in the CBCT Core Curriculum. \nThis unique Specialist Consultant taught course offers a three day interactive educational experience focusing on the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (Level 1) and image reporting (Level 2) of both 2D and 3D imaging\, primarily for smaller volume CBCT. \nCompletion of this course equips the practitioner with the knowledge required to comply with their responsibilities according to IRMER (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations). \nCourse description\nWe offer a number of options ranging from the full\, combined three day course\, to individual sessions. Full attendance is required to allow certification. Day 3 provides candidates with the opportunity to gain guided practical experience\, and time to reflect on learning before completing the course. \nDays 1 and 2 (17 and 18 December 2025)\nCovers Level 1 and 2A course material (this allows didactic\, group work  and interactive workshop elements throughout). \nDay 3 (4 February 2026)\nLevel 2B covers essential material after delegates have gained practical experience and had time to reflect on their learning\, before completing the course. \nA learner / delegate-centred approach is adopted throughout\, allowing delegates to understand the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (IRMER Referrer role). \nAn holistic approach to Image reporting (IRMER Operator Reporter role) covering 2D and 3D imaging primarily for smaller volume CBCT is offered. \nLearning outcomes\nThe course is delivered in two sessions – initial 2 days followed by a separate final day a few weeks after the first 2 day session to allow reflection and utilisation of new skills. \nAt the end of this course delegates will be able to: \n\nMake safe CBCT referrals with a sound understanding of the Physics / Radiation dosages involved and the patient factors to consider before utilising this 3D imaging modality\nAppreciate when 2D and 3D CBCT imaging are best used and how to access guidelines in this regard\nRecapitulate knowledge of 2D dental imaging and learn the anatomical patterns associated with CBCT 3D presentations to know what ‘normal’ looks like\nAppreciate the Radiation safety (IRMER and IRR legislation) surrounding the use of CBCT\nOperate / ‘Drive‘ CBCT viewing software –  utilise MPR screens to interrogate the full FOV\nSafely analyse and construct a smaller Vol CBCT report using ‘protocols’ (utilising taught higher order thinking tools ) in a systematic fashion and know when to ask for help\nAnalyse examples of concerning dental/maxillofacial disease presentations and know how best to refer on urgent cases. SUMMARY:Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgical Trainee Casting Course – December 2025
DESCRIPTION:During this two day course delegates will learn the basic casting techniques and skills specifically required for CPD surgical trainees development within the NHS. \nOverview\nThe Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre is a level 1 major trauma centre at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary\, one of twelve major trauma centres in the UK treating both adults and children. \nThis course covers the basic principles of casting techniques and skills specifically required for surgical trainees’ continuing professional development in the NHS. \nIt will explore the appropriate prescriptions relating to injury including the safe application of backslabs as well as full casts with manipulation techniques. \nDelivery of the course comprises a range of presentations and workshop learning led by specialists in their field. SUMMARY:Constraint Induced Movement Therapy for Preschool Children - December 2025
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course introduces therapists to the One-Handed Therapy Intervention (OTI) Programme – a unique toolkit for families who have a child aged 2-4 years with hemiplegia.  \nConstraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a highly evidence based\, complex intervention to improve hand function of children with hemiplegia. \nThere is no current comprehensive resource to give parents/carers step-by-step instructions on how to use activities to target their child’s goals through CIMT. \nThe OTI toolkit addresses this by providing therapists with: \n\nlibrary of graded\, play-based activity cards\,\nuser manuals\,\ntherapy diary\,\nattractive restraint\,\nmotivational resources\,\nfollow-up bimanual programme\,\ndigital record keeping tool.\n\nThe OTI toolkit ensures that therapists have all the pre-prepared components needed to quickly and easily compile an effective evidence based CIMT programme\, that can then be delivered by families and staff in early years settings. \nThe resources that are given to families are designed to support them to successfully implement the programme. \n\nOTI Programme Toolkit – all course content and materials copyright © The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust 2024-2025. All rights reserved. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe course provides thorough training and support in how to use the OTI toolkit. The course fee also includes all the materials in the OTI toolkit (see photo above). \nAt the end of the course\, you will be provided with all the components needed to enable you to deliver the programme with one child in order to complete the post course accreditation process. \nUpon successful completion of this accreditation\, you will be provided with the additional kit components to enable you to deliver the programme to a further four children. \nExtra materials can be ordered as required. \n(Please note that you may incur additional charges if delivery is required outside of the UK). \nThis programme uses a range of carefully selected toys which are loaned to families. These toys are not provided and therefore you are required to obtain these in order to deliver the programme. \nYou will be supplied with information of what toys are needed and suggestions of where in the UK you may purchase them. It requires a theoretical basis to underpin practical application and a course of guided practice. \nThe instructors leading this course will be an orthopaedic surgeon and orthopaedic practitioner specialising in casting techniques and they will be joined by a specialist hand therapist. \nThe course content will cover fractures and soft tissue trauma and explore the appropriate prescription relating to the injury including the safe application of backslabs\, casts and splinting techniques. SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - April 2025
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging\nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nThis 3 day course run in Newcastle by Dr Neil Health\, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist has been validated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) in order to match the recommended hours for Level 2 reporting. \nIf delegates have recently received a certificate for Level 1 then they can attend days 1 and 3 only\, if they wish. These delegates can attend the second day of the CBCT course (2a) as it builds on the first day and more workshop elements are included to maximise CBCT teaching and reporting in the time available.  \nDates\nDay 1:   Tuesday 15 April 2025\nDay 2:   Wednesday 16 April 2025\nDay 3:   Thursday 5 June 2025 \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. This CBCT training is additional to that already required as part of the Continuing Education and Training in radiology and radiation protection. \nIn line with this report\, practices owning a CBCT unit or wishing to make referrals for CBCT examinations should ensure their staff are trained in the CBCT Core Curriculum. \nThis unique Specialist Consultant taught course offers a three day interactive educational experience focusing on the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (Level 1) and image reporting (Level 2) of both 2D and 3D imaging\, primarily for smaller volume CBCT. \nCompletion of this course equips the practitioner with the knowledge required to comply with their responsibilities according to IRMER (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations). \nCourse description\nWe offer a number of options ranging from the full\, combined three day course\, to individual sessions. Full attendance is required to allow certification. Day 3 provides candidates with the opportunity to gain guided practical experience\, and time to reflect on learning before completing the course. \nDays 1 and 2 (15 and 16 April 2025)\nCovers Level 1 and 2A course material (this allows didactic\, group work  and interactive workshop elements throughout). \nDay 3 (5 June 2025)\nLevel 2B covers essential material after delegates have gained practical experience and had time to reflect on their learning\, before completing the course. \nA learner / delegate-centred approach is adopted throughout\, allowing delegates to understand the theory behind the safe operation and referral for CBCT (IRMER Referrer role). \nAn holistic approach to Image reporting (IRMER Operator Reporter role) covering 2D and 3D imaging primarily for smaller volume CBCT is offered. \nLearning outcomes\nThe course is delivered in two sessions – initial 2 days followed by a separate final day a few weeks after the first 2 day session to allow reflection and utilisation of new skills. \nAt the end of this course delegates will be able to: \n\nMake safe CBCT referrals with a sound understanding of the Physics / Radiation dosages involved and the patient factors to consider before utilising this 3D imaging modality\nAppreciate when 2D and 3D CBCT imaging are best used and how to access guidelines in this regard\nRecapitulate knowledge of 2D dental imaging and learn the anatomical patterns associated with CBCT 3D presentations to know what ‘normal’ looks like\nAppreciate the Radiation safety (IRMER and IRR legislation) surrounding the use of CBCT\nOperate / ‘Drive‘ CBCT viewing software –  utilise MPR screens to interrogate the full FOV\nSafely analyse and construct a smaller Vol CBCT report using ‘protocols’ (utilising taught higher order thinking tools ) in a systematic fashion and know when to ask for help\nAnalyse examples of concerning dental/maxillofacial disease presentations and know how best to refer on urgent cases. SUMMARY:One-day Paediatric ECG and Arrhythmia - March 2025

SUMMARY:Dental CBCT Levels 1 & 2 - December 2024
DESCRIPTION:Cone-beam CT is an exciting development in dental and maxillofacial imaging.\nHowever\, the previous guidance on the safe use of dental x-ray equipment does not address CBCT as the radiation protection measures needed for this modality extend beyond the previous guidance. \nThis 3 day course has been validated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) in order to match the recommended hours for Level 2 reporting. \nIf delegates have recently received a certificate for Level 1 then they can attend days 1 and 3 only\, if they wish. These delegates can attend the second day of the CBCT course (2a) as it builds on the first day and more workshop elements are included to maximise CBCT teaching and reporting in the time available.  \nDates:\nDay 1:   Monday 16th December 2024\nDay 2:  Tuesday 17th December 2024\nDay 3:  TBC \nLegal requirements\nA dentist referring for CBCT is legally required by the Department of Health to have undertaken ‘Core Training in CBCT’ as outlined in the HPA-CRCE-010 report. SUMMARY:Constraint Induced Movement Therapy for Preschool Children - November 2024
DESCRIPTION:This unique course introduces therapists to the One-Handed Therapy Intervention (OTI) Programme\nConstraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a highly evidence based complex intervention to improve hand function of children with hemiplegia. \nThe OTI Programme is a tool kit developed by therapists for therapists to use with families who have a child aged 2 – 4 years with hemiplegia. Currently there is no comprehensive resource that gives parents/carers step-by-step instructions on how to use activities to target their child’s goals. \nThe OTI toolkit addresses this by providing therapists with a library of graded\, play-based activity cards\, user manuals\, therapy diary\, attractive restraint\, motivational resources\, a follow-up bimanual programme and a digital record keeping tool. \n\nThis ensures that therapists have all the components needed to quickly and easily compile an effective evidence based CIMT programme that can then be delivered by families and staff in early years settings. \nThe course provides thorough training and support in how to use the OTI tool kit. \nFollowing the course therapists will be required to complete a certification process using the kit (provided during the course) with one child. \nUpon successful completion of this certification\, you will be provided with additional kit components to enable you to deliver the programme to a further four children. Extra materials can be ordered as required. \nThis programme uses a range of carefully selected toys which are loaned to families. These toys are not provided and therefore you are required to obtain these in order to deliver the programme. \nYou will be supplied with information of what toys are needed and suggestions of where in the UK you may purchase them. Every effort has been made to ensure these costs are reasonable and that the majority of the toys are reusable. \nDelivery\nThe course is provided across two days – followed by a subsequent virtual 1:1 certification session approximately 3 – 4 months afterwards. \nKey outcomes by the end of this course include the ability to: \n\nUnderstand the purpose and utility of all the resources in the tool kit\nIdentify children who may benefit from CIMT following assessment\nCreate a bespoke CIMT programme using the OTI toolkit which delivers the key therapy ingredients\, and similarly create a follow up bimanual programme\nSupport families and staff in early years settings to deliver the programmes\nEvaluate progress and plan next steps.\n\nAudience\nThe course is delivered by Janice Pearse and Vicki Wisher\, Advanced Paediatric Occupational Therapists\, both of whom have extensive experience working with children with hemiplegia. \nThe course is open to qualified paediatric Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists. SUMMARY:One-day Paediatric ECG and Arrhythmia
