SUMMARY:Management and Care of Paediatric Tracheostomies - April 2026
DESCRIPTION:As the number of paediatric tracheostomies rises\, so does the need for close observation by clinicians who have completed competency skills in tracheostomy management and care.  \n✨ This interactive one day course allows delegates to gain an awareness of the anatomy and physiology of the paediatric airway as well as tracheostomy management\, from insertion to de-cannulation. \n✨ It includes 3 skill station group activities followed by 5 simulation scenarios to enable assessment of knowledge and skills towards being ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. \n✨ When delegates have subsequently completed their Tracheostomy Competencies they will then be deemed ‘Tracheostomy Competent’ and receive a certificate. \nLearning outcomes\n\nSuction\, cleaning and changing of a tracheostomy\nUse of a tracheostomy wedge and suction of patient\nPatient tracheostomy change using Marpac and Velcro ties\nUnplanned tracheostomy change\nEmergency tracheostomy change\n\nWe will also look at how the multi-disciplinary team provide care for patients with tracheostomies. \nPre-course materials\nA pre-course workbook on Paediatric Tracheostomy Management will be sent out to delegates to be completed before commencement of the course as an initial assessment. \nFollowing attendance staff will be considered ‘Tracheostomy Safe’. SUMMARY:Targeted treatments and immunotherapy for Haematological Cancers - May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Delivered over one afternoon session\, Dr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will guide you through many of the most relevant topics relating to modern systemic treatments for haematological cancers. \nSession 1: The first session will focus on how haematological cancers develop and the faulty cells that cause them. Elaine will also describe the unique features of B cells and explain why they give rise to over 80% of haematological cancers diagnosed in the UK. Elaine also explains the mechanisms of action of various treatments given to people with B cell cancers: chronic lymphocytic leukaemia\, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia\, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. \nSession 2: In the second session\, Elaine explores treatments for multiple myeloma\, acute myeloid leukaemia\, Hodgkin lymphoma\, and chronic myeloid leukaemia. She also explains the science behind CAR T cell therapy and describes the progress made to date and innovations for the future. \nAudience\nDr Vickers’ goal is to explain the science that underpins each treatment. She also hopes to provide learners with a broad understanding of why treatments work well for some patients but not for others. \nThis half day course is ideal for research nurses\, clinical nurse specialists\, pharmacists and clinical trials coordinators. The two I’d prioritise explain why we use small chemical compounds (small molecules) and antibodies as cancer treatments. If you have more time\, do also watch the videos on kinase inhibitors and immune checkpoint inhibitors.” \nAbout Elaine Vickers\nDr Elaine Vickers\nElaine Vickers of Science Communicated Ltd has a PhD in Molecular Biology. She has worked as a cancer educator for over twenty years. \nShe is passionate about demystifying the science behind cancer biology and the latest cancer treatments such as kinase inhibitors\, monoclonal antibodies\, and immunotherapies. \nElaine is experienced in teaching people with any level of scientific or medical knowledge. SUMMARY:Demystifying the Science Behind Systemic Treatments for Prostate\, Bladder and Kidney Cancers - July 2026
DESCRIPTION:Delivered over two afternoon sessions\, Dr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will provide an introduction to the science behind a wide variety of systemic treatments given to people with prostate\, bladder\, or kidney cancer. \nSession 1: The first half-day session is dedicated to prostate cancer. Hormone therapies are central to the treatment of prostate cancer\, Elaine will describe their mechanism of action\, explain why cancers become resistant to them\, and look at the new generation of hormone therapies in development. She will also describe PSMA-targeted treatment approaches\, PARP inhibitors\, and PI3K- and AKT-targeted treatments. \nSession 2: The second half-day session is about bladder and kidney cancer. Much of the session will be focused on immune checkpoint inhibitors and their uses and limitations. Elaine will also describe angiogenesis inhibitors and targeted therapies such as antibody-drug conjugates and FGFR inhibitors. \nAs ever\, Elaine’s presentations will be full of colourful diagrams\, and she will explain the science behind the treatments using clear\, understandable descriptions. She will explore how the treatments are designed to work\, but also explain why they often only work for a time\, before the person’s disease becomes resistant. \nAudience\nDr Vickers’ goal is to explain the science that underpins each treatment. She also hopes to provide learners with a broad understanding of why treatments work well for some patients but not for others. \nThis half day course is ideal for research nurses\, clinical nurse specialists\, pharmacists and clinical trials coordinators. DESCRIPTION:Please note our Leading an Empowered Organisation™ (LEO) programme is a development opportunity for nursing\, midwifery and allied health professional (NMAHP) staff working at Newcastle Hospitals only \n\n\n\n\nAttendance\n\n\n\nPart One\n11 – 13 August 2026\n9:00am – 4:30pm\n\n\nPart Two\n9 October 2026\n9:00am – 4:30pm\n\n\n\nCourse description \nLeading an Empowered Organisation™ (LEO) is a dynamic leadership development programme to help leaders to create environments for high performing individuals and teams and to support professional practice and accountability to become a reality. \nDesigned to ensure ownership at every level of the organisation for decision making\, creating effective team relationships\, managing risk and creative problem solving\, the goal of this programme is to enable our senior nurses\, midwives and allied health professionals (NMAHPs) who manage and lead others to reach their full leadership potential. \nThe programme is made up of two parts: \nPart One \nThe first three days of the LEO programme employs a strong emphasis on supporting leaders to develop an empowering approach when leading and managing teams. \nIt provides a practical approach\, containing values and evidenced skills as a ‘tool box’ that can immediately be applied in practice. \nPart Two \nThe follow up component of the LEO programme is a full day review session\, about two months after the initial three-day session. \nDelegates will deliver a short presentation on an improvement project in their practice area which they will have identified during Part One of the programme\, allowing them to apply their newly acquired LEO principles. \nLearning outcomes \nAt the end of this programme delegates will be able to: \n\nDescribe the conceptual framework for LEO and differentiate centralised and decentralised management approaches understanding when each may be most effective\nDefine the leader’s role in articulating expectations for individual and group performance as well as concepts of responsibility\, authority and accountability\nApply the concepts of Responsibility\, Authority and Accountability to issues from personal experience within the delegate’s current role\nDiscuss the need for leaders to build relationships\, avoid unhealthy behaviours and achieve interdependence\nDescribe the role of the leader in modelling respect and regard for others as a ‘way of being’\nReview styles of communication and identify personal prominent style\nExplore the impact of a leader’s unhealthy behaviours on followers and identify their own unhealthy behaviours\nDiscuss the need for empowered leaders to build capacity\, avoid punitive practices and establish a learning environment\nDiscuss the need for empowered leaders to lead change\, avoid problem processing and gain commitment\nConstruct an action plan for using the knowledge\, skills and tools represented in the empowerment framework to improve leadership effectiveness.\n\nAudience and criteria \nOur LEO programme is for Newcastle Hospitals staff only\, aimed at those working at Band 7\, Ward Manager level\, and Band 6\, Aspiring Ward Manager level\, and for those who manage and/or lead teams or who are leaders in their own right from across the NMAHP workforce. \nBooking \nPlease make sure that your manager has agreed for you to attend and that you have approved funding to study the LEO programme in 2026/27. \nTo book a place on this course go to Tickets at the bottom of the page.  At checkout enter coupon code NUTH – this indicates that you have approved funding to study the LEO programme. \nWhen you book a place you will be asked for the following information. SUMMARY:Targeted treatments and immunotherapy for Lung Cancer - September 2026
DESCRIPTION:Delivered over two afternoon sessions\, Dr Elaine Vickers – a leading independent educator on the science of new cancer treatments – will guide you through many of the most relevant topics relating to modern systemic treatments for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). \nThe first session will focus on the gene faults that drive many NSCLCs and on the targeted treatments that exploit these faults\, such as inhibitors of EGFR\, ALK\, ROS1\, B-Raf\, HER2\, MET\, and RET. \nThe second session explores cancer’s relationship with the immune system and focuses on the checkpoint inhibitor group of immunotherapies\, which include PD-1\, PD-L1 and CTLA-4 targeted antibody therapies. \nAudience\nDr Vickers’ goal is to explain the science that underpins each treatment. She also hopes to provide learners with a broad understanding of why treatments work well for some patients but not for others. \nThis half day course is ideal for research nurses\, clinical nurse specialists\, pharmacists and clinical trials coordinators. The two I’d prioritise explain why we use small chemical compounds (small molecules) and antibodies as cancer treatments. If you have more time\, do also watch the videos on kinase inhibitors and immune checkpoint inhibitors.” \nAbout Elaine Vickers\nDr Elaine Vickers\nElaine Vickers of Science Communicated Ltd has a PhD in Molecular Biology. She has worked as a cancer educator for over twenty years. \nShe is passionate about demystifying the science behind cancer biology and the latest cancer treatments such as kinase inhibitors\, monoclonal antibodies\, and immunotherapies. \nElaine is experienced in teaching people with any level of scientific or medical knowledge. SUMMARY:Paediatric Palliative Care Study Day for Hospice Staff - December 2026
DESCRIPTION:This face to face course led by the regional Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) is designed to support staff working in hospices caring for children across the North East and North Cumbria. \nIntroduction\nPaediatric palliative care is about promoting the best possible quality of life and care for every child and young person with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. \nThis specialist field has seen significant growth as the benefits of high quality palliative input is increasingly recognised such as allowing children\, young people and their families to have access to respite care and advocating their choices in terms of where they want to receive end of life care. \nThe Children’s Holistic Integrated Palliative Care Service (CHIPS) based at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle covers the entire North East and North Cumbria region. They provide expert support\, advice and guidance whilst engaging with those looking after children with life limiting and life threatening conditions. \nAs part of their role the team offer training and educational support to help build knowledge\, skills and confidence.
