Join us for a dynamic, hands-on study day designed to strengthen your confidence and skills when dealing with ophthalmic emergencies.

This interactive day combines theoretical learning working through clinical scenarios, ensuring you leave equipped to oversee the initial management of urgent eye injuries and conditions effectively.

Simulation

Practical training sessions led by experienced ophthalmology experts at the RVI’s Emergency Eye Department:

  • Vision, colour vision and pupils including RAPD
  • Confrontational visual field testing
  • Extraocular movement testing
  • Slit lamp examination
  • Simulated corneal foreign body removal and everting eyelids
  • Simulated lateral canthotomy/cantholysis
  • Direct ophthalmoscopy
  • Scenario/quiz

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the day, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of ocular anatomy and history taking
  • Impart basic referral information when referring to Ophthalmology
  • Diagnose and manage the acute red eye and sudden vision loss
  • Diagnose and manage anisocoria
  • Develop practical skills for corneal foreign body removal and lateral canthotomy/cantholysis
  • Gain confidence to provide initial management of globe rupture and orbital cellulitis

All participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion.

  • Non-ophthalmic doctors (primary and secondary care)
  • Medical students with an interest in ophthalmology

Financial information

If you are employed by Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, you can use the coupon code NUTH at the checkout to make a provisional booking and you will need to arrange access to in-house development funding. Your booking will remain provisional until your request has been validated with a funding/study leave reference.

If you are not employed by the Newcastle Hospitals an online card payment is required at the point of booking. Alternatively, if you are to be funded by your employer an invoice can be requested by using the coupon code Invoice.

Cancellation and refunds policy

Should you no longer be able to attend the event on the booked date, please contact the Academy as we may be able to offer an alternative date subject to an admin charge.

Should you still wish to cancel your booking, you or your employer will be charged as per the fees outlined below.  Please contact [email protected]t to cancel your booking.
