Course description

Orthopaedic casting is a procedural skill. It requires a theoretical basis to underpin practical application and a course of guided practice.

The instructors leading this course will be an orthopaedic surgeon and orthopaedic practitioner specialising in casting techniques and they will be joined by a specialist hand therapist.

The course content will cover fractures and soft tissue trauma and explore the appropriate prescription relating to the injury including the safe application of backslabs, casts and splinting techniques. (Please note this course does not include thermos plastic splinting.)

The hybrid theoretical and practical approach includes presentations, regular Q&A sessions and assessment, periods of reflection as well as the opportunity to practice casting, all designed to support delegates to:

  • review the anatomy and physiology of common hand injuries;
  • learn from experts about the optimal management of common hand injuries;
  • understand the principles of hand rehabilitation and splint management of common conditions;
  • consider professional accountability and legal issues associated with cast application;
  • understand the theoretical basis to justify the decision making process in the selection of the appropriate casting technique, focusing on prescription, materials, positioning, and application process;
  • demonstrate, in workshop conditions, the ability to implement and evaluate a prescription plan, including the appropriate selection and application of materials and casting techniques;
  • demonstrate, in workshop conditions, the clinical and practical skills required to perform safe casting techniques;
  • demonstrate an understanding and awareness of the requirements for safe removal of a cast;
  • clearly articulate how the knowledge and skills gained will help develop their current competence.
