Course description
Orthopaedic casting is a procedural skill. It requires a theoretical basis to underpin practical application and a course of guided practice.
This consultant and orthopaedic practitioner led course will explore the appropriate prescription relating to all paediatric musculoskeletal injuries including fractures and will cover the safe application of backslabs and splinting techniques.
The hybrid theoretical and practical approach of this course includes interactive presentations, regular Q&A sessions, assessment and periods of reflection. By the end of the day delegates will be able to:
- understand the anatomy, physiology and management of common paediatric orthopaedic trauma and injuries;
- interpret the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Casting Guidelines specific to prescription and application;
- feel confident, when following the theoretical basis, to make sound judgements when applying the BOA casting guidelines in the selection of the appropriate casting technique, focusing on prescription, materials, positioning, and application process;
- demonstrate clinical and practical skills required to perform safe casting techniques practiced in workshop conditions.
Audience
This course is aimed at doctors in training, nursing staff and healthcare assistants working in a paediatric accident and emergency or other urgent care setting.
We also welcome applications from orthopaedic practitioners and plaster technicians who do not currently work in a trauma or paediatric setting, or who would like to refresh their skills.
Fees
The practical nature of this full day course means that places are limited with a slightly high fee than a mainly theoretical course. For further information on making payments please see our FAQ – Making Payments
